SPOKANE -- A baby found locked in a hot car in North Spokane Thursday night is recovering, but uninjured.

Employee spotted baby 'all wet, red, not crying' inside SUV An employee at the Grocery Outlet spotted the inside the sweltering SUV around 6:00 p.m. She advised the store to make an announcement over the intercom, advising customers there was a baby locked in a car.

The employee told KREM 2 News, "nobody came up for like, 10 minutes."

Employees confronted the woman when she finally spoke to them; they say she told them, "Oh my God, I forgot I had a baby."

The mother claims she had only been shopping for 15 minutes but her shopping cart was full of items and the woman had an empty baby carrier with her in the store.

Firefighters broke out the car window because the baby was sweating profusely. "She was all wet, she was red," said the employee who spotted the young girl. "She was really hot, she wasn't crying, she looked kind of weak."

The mother who left the baby in the car faces possible wreckless engangerment charges.

"I forgot I had a baby"

I can't believe I actually found a place to use this.

It's easy and it happens to a lot of people. I think it is something many peoople don't talk about though because the knee-jerk reaction of others is "The mother should be shot".

Typically it is a first time mom or dad who has their less-than-18 month old child in the back seat where they are not seen or heard. Since they have a 20 or so year track record of never having to think about having a baby in the back seat and their brain is following its normal pattern. They are driving along and something unexpected happens at a planned short stop. For example, a friend sees them and they get out of the car and start talking. Then after a few minutes they go "Oh my gosh! I forgot about my baby!" It happens all the time.

I'm not excusing it as "OK", I'm just saying that it happens, and it doesn't only happen to evil or bad people.
Perhaps someone will invent something to stop this from occurring. Screaming and after-the-fact punishment aren't doing it.

I'm sure she meant that she forgot she had the baby with her.

But she should still be shot.

“Some people are too stupid to have kids!”

***

Or too young. I didn’t see an age given for the alleged mother.

Why the hell didn’t one of the men in the area punch his fist through the window, or at least kick it out?

Contrary to hollywood, car windows are tough to break. Punch one, you'll break your hand before you break the window.

Having said that, any decent-sized rock or piece of metal will do the trick.

Incidentally, I do recommend the Grocery Outlet. Great prices, good selection.

“Have we become that neutered by laws and litigation?”

Too bad she wasn’t neutered before she produced this forgotten offspring. The child and the world would be better off.

If that were me coming upon a baby sitting in a car with 101 temperatures the window would have been broken out immediately, then I’d start trying to locate the person responsible.

Exactly (somebody would have to pay for the broken window)

Let the "AUTHORITES" handle it. sarc/off

It sounds like someone who does drugs, I don't think a normal mom would be capable of doing something like that. Maybe she is on antidepressants. People are relying on that stuff too much. It used to be people were a little more resilient.

Why does this happen every summer??

I can’t describe in full color on this site what I think of these people and what I think should happen to them.

You're right. They probably should have tried to find a brick or something to get in. I tried breaking through mine with a golf club once and the dang thing just bounced right off (at least the car didn't slice off to the right though).

I once had a client who forgot he had kids, but he had an excuse. He was badly injured in a traffic accident and had amnesia. He didn’t remember several years of his life prior to the accident.
