Sources: Howie Carr jumps to rival WTKK

In a bombshell development, WRKO-AM radio host Howie Carr is jumping ship to rival station WTKK-FM, where he’ll take over the prized morning-drive slot, sources tell the Herald. Carr, whose contract with WRKO-AM (680) expires in September, will host WTKK’s morning drive show solo and replaces shamed syndicated talk jock Don Imus, who lost his national show after the “nappy-headed hos” scandal. Carr inked a multi-year deal with WTKK (96.9), sources said. Carr could not be reached for comment and is vacationing in Florida. His move to WTKK pits him against disgraced, ex-House Speaker Tom Finneran, Carr’s longtime nemesis. Finneran’s morning-drive show on WRKO has bombed since he got behind the mic earlier this year. WRKO was banking on the former speaker to boost their dismal morning ratings. Carr informed WRKO of his decision to leave today, sources said. A Boston Herald columnist, Carr is WRKO’s marquee talent and is their highest-rated radio host by far. He has been with the AM station for 20 years and has had his afternoon-drive show since 1994. After Imus was canned in April, former Boston Globe columnist Mike Barnicle replaced him on WTKK but left the station altogether last month after failing to strike a deal with WTKK. With his jump to FM, Carr escapes WRKO AM’s weaker signal and AM radio’s dwindling, younger audience.

Fantastic news.

My only fear is that Howie’s slowing down a bit. I hope he doesn’t turn soft.

This move is ironic on a number of levels. Two people that Howie Carr seemed to loathe were Tommy Finneran and Don Imus. Now he’ll be competing with one and replacing the other. Good for Howie. RKO has been treating him like dirt lately, especially with the Finneran fiasco. I look forward to having something decent to listen to in the mornings again!

Great move for Howie. He's been a solid firebrand for so long that I don't see him slowing down in his new venue. He'll have a greater national impact, with his signal having a larger reach.

Not to mention Mike Barnicle who quit that time slot just last week.

I hope WTKK can syndicate his show because that station drops when you get past Sturbridge - but they are on the Net ;)

In the winter, WRKO would be out when you get past Framingham. I wish Howie was on XM.

Somehow I think that this will be good. WRKO has really fallen apart and Howie’s better off where he’ll be appreciated. He’ll also suck whatever life there is out of Tommy’s show.

Howie will bury Finneran. Looks like a good move for Howie, I’ll miss him in the afternoons.

About a month after Finneran came on he had Governor Patrick on and Tommy made a joke about arranging a "Ride" for Howie Carr. He said "Three will leave and two will come back if you know what I mean". Even the Governor was embarassed.

Howie's going to enjoy putting "two in the hat" to Finneran's Forum.

If true, I hope his new station allows him to do the show exactly the way he wants, politically incorrect sound effects and all. I’ve gotten used to listening him after work, when I was tired and needed a few laughs to pick me up—it’ll be a little strange listening to him in the morning.

Interesting development. Howie Carr detested Imus because Imus made a filthy, utterly debauched comment on air about Carr’s wife, (something to do with Carr’s wife, anal sex and a black man, if I recall correctly). The Carr family eventually sued and recieved an out of court settlement from Imus. Howie Carr revealed this story on his show shortly after the Imus debacle came out.

Take note, it may be the RoMass, but we do have FReepers and Republicans there, and must keep them in mind.
