'B.S.' DEGREES $CAM AT TOURO; STAFFERS FAKE THE GRADE FOR CASH: DA (connects to gay ex-gov, lover)
NY POST ^ | July 17, 2007 | LAURA ITALIANO

Posted on 07/17/2007 1:04:12 PM PDT by Liz

It was sawbucks-for-sheepskins at Touro College, according to a shocking new Manhattan indictment. For at least four years, greedy college administrators pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from former students who wanted to change F's into A's on their Touro transcripts. But the accusations get even worse. Two administrators are charged with awarding fictitious degrees to "graduates" who had never once stepped foot in any of the NY-based international college's 29 locations.

New York-based Touro College recently figured in an extortion attempt by gay ex-Gov McGreevey's lover, Golan Cipel (Cipel worked for Touro after being forced out of his $110,000 Homeland job).

Cipel demanded McGreevey setup a Touro medical school in New Jersey as part of the deal to keep Cipel quiet about McG's homosexuality. The move precipitated McG's departure from office.

Touro apparently wanted medical school credentials to get its greedy hands on billions of federal Medicare/Aid monies.

One of Touro's board of directors is felon and ex-con Charles Kushner who went to jail for business and political fraud. Kushner is the individual who introduced Cipel to McG in Israel at the time McG went on a politician’s obeisance tour. Kushner, a wealthy developer, and McG's largest donor, was building apartments in Israel, in the same town where Cipel lived.

Ex-Sen Robert Torricelli also worked for Touro through his company, Rosemont Associates----Torricelli was forced to resign from office after damaging news reports of his Senatorial conduct.

This slimy collection of fakes, frauds and felons may have awarded phony degrees to fake doctors who may be operating on you, or your loved ones.

My father worked there.

He complained for more than two years to the administration about what was going on, and the administration softsoaped him - assuring him that they were aware of the problem and working on the irregularities.

Then when he was actually asked to sign off on documents he knew were fraudulent and he complained to the administration and he was told to "just sign them to make everyone happy", he (in my opinion unwisely) quit and (wisely)reported them to the police.

This investigation was years in the making.

It ain't great, but it ain't THAT bad.

The only thing at issue is a physician's assistant diploma, not a doctor's med school diploma.

Doesn't look like Touro has a med school, the highest degree they offer in "health care administration" is a masters in management in various areas.

So the only possibility here is that you have an incompetent PA out there - who should be working under doctor's orders anyhow. As I said, not great, but not as bad as you feared.

Now that it’s all come out, your father should write a book about his experiences and get the $$$ he really deserves.

It's funny you say that. I told him today that if any of the local papers find his name on the complaints and try to work him for free information, he should ask them where they were 5 years ago when he wrote a letter to the editor.

Doesn't look like Touro has a med school

They wanted to build one to compete with Yeshiva's Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

That seems unlikely now.

Story sounds familiar. Posts on Touro dirty dealings go back a ways-—you may have posted on a previous thread.

I understand Touro also advertises to sucker vulnerable US military members into its degree mills.

Spoke to my father.

He tells me:

(1) The Reagan Department Of Education launched an investigation into Touro's finances in the 1980s.

(2) This Baron guy is only part of a much larger puzzle.

(3) The real money that Touro was making was not Baron's diploma scam, but in packing the school with Russian immigrants in the 90s. Why? Because of their still-lingering status as "asylum seekers" rather than being standard immigrants, Touro was able to get Federal money to pay their inflated tuition. Thousands of Russians signed up for classes and for room and board and were reimbursed by the feds through various programs - despite never setting foot on campus.

Also Touro sited its campus buildings and annexes to maximize the amount of TAP aid to private colleges from the New York State government - a program designed to promote secondary education in underprivileged neighborhoods.

These scams involved them with the Russian underworld, who brought them fresh "asylum-seekers" in return for a cut of the Federal money.

(4) The Golan Cipel connection comes from the relationship between Russian gangsters in the US and Russian gangsters in Israel.

Certain Israelis came and went at Touro that my father's Israeli friends told him were up to no good.

(5) My father's assessment is that Baron is a fall guy, and that Touro is "cooperating" in bringing him down to prevent further digging. My father also believes that Baron may be too fearful of underworld retaliation - as he says: "I never took money from those guys so I never had to interact with those guys - Baron may have serious reasons to be scared."

I once was an Employment Counselor and assisted a grad of Touro to get a job at a battered persons shelter. She was fired because she couldn’t spell “the” correctly in the case notes. No lie, the truth, actually happened.
New York Taxpayers should demand a refund. Right.

Appears to me that the only difference between Harvard (which gives nothing but an A for all courses), and this college is when the dollars are paid. Harvard simply collects it up front as tuition. Same types of folks seem to graduate, however. (Apologies to those of you from Harvard that actually learned something... - physics, math, etc.)
