“The rise of mollusks across the globe was a harbinger of doom roughly 250 million years ago”

Mollusks you see cause global warming — and global warming.........

“I vow to defeat these mollusk invaders with ample stores of butter and garlic.”

Don’t forget the beer. Can’t eat mollusks without a healthy portion of beer.

Stupid for sure, but not a whole lot stupider than most of what I see on these pre-history shows on TV. The stupidest one of all is the one where a bunch of “proto-humans just sort of come down from from trees and start walking around on two legs on the African savannas with 500-lb predators running around all over the place.

You missed the money shot of all PC science articles. It's right here:

"Instead, these findings support theories suggesting the end-Permian was triggered by ocean changes long in the making, "the climax of a prolonged environmental crisis," Clapham said.

The whole Permian period, stretching from about 300 million to 250 million years ago, saw gradual warming. This would have slowed down circulation in the ocean, eventually leading to very low levels of oxygen in the water. Massive volcanism near the end of the Permian might have wreaked even further havoc on the environment."

Silly person! They all had proto-cellphones, so they could warn each other about the 500-lb predators, and order out for pizza.

Squid are Aggressive Predators. Even the largest mammals are attacked but you can help.

Eat more Calamari and pray that squid do not grow a backbone!

So mollusks sequestered so much carbon dioxide as calcium carbonate in their shells that they turned off global warming and plunged the world into an extinction causing ice age?

Monty Python had the mollusks pegged back in the 70's:

Zorba:
The randiest of the gastropods is the limpet. This hot-blooded little beast with its tent-like shell is always on the job. Its extra-marital activities are something startling. Frankly I don't know how the female limpet finds the time to adhere to the rock-face.
