In a recent article, The Economist called blacks and Hispanics “natural allies.” Citing Barack Obama’s “brothers in the fight for equality” reference to the two groups, the writer conceded that with blacks and Hispanics, there’s no such thing.
I frequently blog about what I perceive as a growing battle between blacks and Hispanics for “preferred minority” status. A preferred minority group is one that ostensibly is under-represented in certain professions and universities. This status goes beyond mere numbers and focuses on “oppression.”
For example, while Asians are a minority group in America, they’re not considered oppressed in the same sense, especially when it comes to college and university admissions. Asians are four percent of the population but account for almost 41 percent of undergraduates at the University of California at Berkeley. Bill “quota man” Clinton once said there were “universities in California that could fill their entire freshman classes with nothing but Asian-Americans.”
Lesser qualified minorities are admitted to elite schools so whites can feel good about themselves, and black Americans have occupied the preferred minority perch in admissions and hiring for the past few decades. Hispanics, growing in political power, are demanding their piece of the preference pie.
Given this tension, why would anyone believe blacks and Hispanics are natural allies? Presumably, since both are minority groups victimized by the majority white power structure, they should join together in a black-brown coalition to fight the oppressor. That’s why the Congressional Black Caucus supports legalizing millions of lawbreaking aliens, despite illegal immigration’s negative impact on its members’ constituents.
This impact is most evident in crime statistics. Hate crimes – a nonsensical crime category conceived to punish the thoughts of heterosexual white men – increasingly involve blacks and Hispanics as victims and perpetrators, at least in California. The Economist cited a hate crimes report, which revealed blacks were 59 percent of hate crime victims in Los Angeles County, and most of the time, the perpetrators were Hispanic.
Gangs played a significant factor in hate crimes. About 80 percent of gang-related hate crimes were committed by Hispanics against blacks. As expected, the researchers pointed not to individual thugs or a violence-glorifying subculture, but to an “anti-immigrant sentiment,” invoking mostly-white organizations like the Minuteman Project and Save Our State, groups trying to keep America from becoming a Third World country.
On the political front, California has experienced a demographic shift, and smaller cities like Lynwood, California, are case studies on how this change plays out at the local level. Lynwood, once predominately black, is over 80 percent Hispanic. Forty percent of residents are “foreign-born,” the Los Angeles Times reported, a euphemism in this context for illegal aliens. Because illegal aliens can’t vote, blacks still have the political advantage. If George Bush manages to get his amnesty bill inked, however, millions of “foreign-born” in every city will be on the road to citizenship. And Hispanics, just as race-conscious as blacks, will vote for Hispanics.
Whether one believes illegal aliens are “taking” jobs from blacks in the private sector, Hispanics certainly are using the race preferences hustle for government jobs. Last year, a coalition of Hispanic groups released a report condemning the Office of Personnel Management, the federal government’s hiring agency, for failing to hire and promote more Hispanics. Blacks tend to be overrepresented in federal agencies, and Hispanics, for now, are underrepresented. About 13.3 percent of the population, Hispanics are 7.4 percent of the federal workforce. Proportionately speaking, they are underrepresented. The solution to this problem? Preferences, of course!
Blacks and Hispanics should be natural allies--in support of principles like the rule of law, a necessary component of a fair and free country. Our government shouldn’t have the power, legal or otherwise, to discriminate for or against any group based on race or ethnicity. Eliminating preferences might alleviate some of the tension.

Someone said there were no individual murder statistic for illegals in prison because the majority of those killed were Black.
Alright, I will say it. I know several hispanics and when the doors are closed they say things about blacks that would make Bull Connor blush. There is an anger there. And not a small dose of ignorance. I do not see blacks and hispanics in any “alliance,” but that is just in my circle of acquaintances.
John Derbyshire of National Review believes this country has essentially two races: black and non-black.
This is the opposite of the traditional liberal dream of the “people of color” coalition, which means all non-whites gang up on whitey.
I think John’s going to be right in the long run. Asians and Latinos have very little white guilt, which is all that has allowed the “civil rights” scam to go on so long.
Actually, if you look at surveys, blacks, Hispanics, and non-Evangelical blue collar whites have strikingly similar beliefs on the role of government in the economy, as well as on social issues.

I wonder if these statistics factor out illegals from the population count. I agree there should be no race preferences in gov't hiring, simply qualifications. I also think blacks have over-played the race card for 50 years...enough is enough. Clean up your own house and compete on a level playing field.
I work in the Personnel area, and handle appeals and claims. I have seen more friction between Hispanic v. Black, and Black v. Asian, than Black v. White.
Blacks won’t be getting bubkas, since between the murder rate and abortion, their percent of the population is going down, not up.
Remember during the ‘92 L.A. riots in South-Central, the first folks Blacks targeted were the Korean shopowners.

This non Evangelical, college degreed “blue-collar” (by choice) white would like to see these surveys.
I’d prefer goobermint as far out of my life as humanly possible. Except for building pretty looking monuments, goobermint sucks at just about everything it sticks it’s money grubbing nose into.
That’s silly. I see Hispanics becoming basically white. No one group “has” any part of the country.

More Americans killed by illegal aliens than Iraq war, study says
When you start digging into the numbers the only ones that can be sourced with the feds are the number of American murdered in 2005: 16692
I have seen federal numbers for illegals held in jail ranging from 19.3% to 27% of the federal prison population.
Here's a sampling of USA cities wanted for murder. What you'll see is that in big USA cities like LA or NYC most of the murderers are Hispanic. Unknown are the % of illegals. In smaller cities the FBI will post the nationalities of the murderers. About 25% of the most wanted are illegals wanted for murder. This number agrees with the percentage of illegals incarcerated in federal prisons. +-25%Pictures of top 10 most wanted in LA. Up until recent stories about crime in LA posted by the LA Times--the pictures included the nationality of the murderers. They were all foreign nationals and mostly Mexican.

There are currently no exact numbers on the number of Americans killed by illegals. Part of the reason is that the government deliberately obscures the number. I talked on the phone with the head of statistics for the US Bureau of Prisons. He said his office wasn't allowed to publish the number of illegal alien murderers. Rather they were forced to put legal and non legal residents in the same category. I talked to ICE. They put out detailed numbers on illegal child molestors. However, they put out nothing on illegal murderers.
Part of the reason for the silence on the matter is that there is evidence to suggest that most Americans being killed by illegals are black--as is the suggestion in this LA Times Article.
All that said, it could be argued that if you include the number of illegals in state and local prisons the number of illegals in jail shrinks to 6% of the total prison population. Never the less if you multiply 16692 (the number of americans murdered in 2005) * .06 (illegal alien percent of total prison population) * 4 (the number of years the US has been in Iraq). The result is that more americans (4006) have been killed by illegals than have been killed in the Iraq war.
