OK, I’m from the Pittsburgh, PA area, and I have heard the use of “thingy” all of my life. I’ve also heard doo-hickey and thingamajig used interchangably with thingy.

“Thingy”. It’s a technical term, you know.

Being an engineer, you should instruct her to use the more technical term “doohickey”............”dooflatchey” is also acceptable.....

My esthetic and pure grammatical nature prefers "thingamajig", but I slip every once in a while and use "thingy".
