Colorado mayor's sympathy for immigrants costs him his job
Los Angeles Times ^ | 11/27/07 | Nicholas Riccardi

GREELEY, COLO. -- Tom Selders is still baffled at how quickly the city he served for years turned on him. The two-term mayor of this conservative farm town had been a political fixture for nearly two decades. A businessman who prided himself on bringing efficiency to city government, Selders infuriated his constituents after jumping into the national debate over illegal immigration. In May he spoke at an open forum in Washington about the effects of last year's immigration raid on a meatpacking plant here, which led to the detention of 262 undocumented workers.

The GOP does not yet understand how strong the immigration issue is with the rank and file members.

Good riddance. Colorado has absorbed more than its share of illegals, crime and poverty. May all traitors and panderers suffer the same fate.

I really feel betrayed by my community," said Selders

I believe it was the other way around Mr. ex-Mayor.

Liberal RINO panders to illegals. Liberal RINO loses reelection. Happy ending.

There were a lot of people who were waiting to be heard in their anonymous way.

The beauty of the ballot box.

BTW, this guy routinely endorsed Democrats running for office, too.

Bill Crystal on Fox this morning pretty much summed that up when he said some kind of third party member would run on anti immigration issue and of course Bill had to say he was oppose to anti immigration.

Pro immigration seems to be a view that’s shared at Fox. Probably why they love Rudy too.

Conservatives are PRO immigration... and are ANTI ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. The LSM does not get to steal the true nature of the issue.

Once again, the headline is TOTALLY DISHONEST.

He did not have sympathy for "immigrants".

He had sympathy for "illegal immigrants".

The media never gets it right BECAUSE THEY DO NOT WANT TO GET IT RIGHT.

If they use the correct terms, right away, they lose the argument.

It be like somebody advocating we call drive either drunk or without licenses, and then be referred to in the media as "pro-driver", or "pro driving rights".

"I really feel betrayed by my community," said Selders, 61.

Arrogant bastard forgot who he worked for and got what he deserved by the "silent majority."

Yeah I agree. What Bill liked, and most of the Fox News people, was the amnesty bill that was trying to be rammed down the throats of the American’s earlier this year.

The elite GOP needs to wake up and hear the people.

That guy should share notes with the guy from Herndon, Virginia, who also got kicked out two years ago as Mayor, for being pro-illegal.

The people simply rose up...and kicked him out.

He, too, in the media was later "dismayed" at the reaction.

These appeasers never do get it, even after they have bit hit upside the head with a political two-by-four.

No doubt, Mr. Selders, the good citizens of Greeley are fed up with their town being an illegal hotbed for the Swift plant. They were sick and tired of the proud culture of their town becoming a Little Mexico.

Quit whining, you sir, are one of the many politicians who is, or will be, washed out to sea until you catch on to the fact that you need to back the concerns of all US citizens, not just that of the Swift plant and it’s employees who are breaking the laws of the USA. Your pandering has endangered the health and well being of the citizens who trusted you.

The elite GOP needs to wake up and hear the people.

What, and drive down profits? There wouldn't be as many chairs on the boards of directors or continued campaign cash for treasonous RINO sellouts should they take a stand for American sovereignty and against illegal immigration. The problem isn't that they don't "hear the people." The problem is that they don't care.

"Many families and children were devastated by parents being arrested and detained," Selders said. "Children -- citizens of the United States -- were left without parents."

That happens all the time when the parents of citizen children break the law. Daddy doesn't file a tax return and his young helpless children may be visiting him in the Federal pokey. Mommy turns tricks to earn a little extra money to buy the kids food, and the kids are now in the care of foster parents. I bet half the criminals in our prisons attribute their criminal behavior to trying to make a better life for their families. American citizens break the law and they go to jail and familes are devasted. Illegal aliens break the law by not only entering and/or remaining in the United States illegally, but by unlawfuly procuring and using fake documentation to unlawfully obtain a job and other benefits, and we're supposed to give these criminals a free ride because "of the children." Boo Hoo!
