Austin (Minnesota) plant workers contract mystery illness [meat packing plant]

A mysterious illness contracted by workers at a Minnesota meat-packing plant is being investigated by state health officials.

Eleven workers at Quality Pork Processing Inc. in Austin, a pork processing plant whose main customers is Austin-based Hormel (NYSE: HRL), became ill. The state says there is no evidence that the public was at risk or that the food from the plant was contaminated.

The workers affected included men and women from a range of ages and ethnicities, State Epidemiologist Ruth Lynfield said Monday. They all worked at the same part of the plant, removing hog brains with compressed air. None of the plant's other 1,300 workers reported symptoms.

Two workers were hospitalized after they complained of symptoms like numbness, and tingling in their arms and legs. While some of the workers have recovered completely, others are currently going through rehabilitation, Health Commissioner Dr. Sanne Magnan said in a statement.

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester reported the matter to the state Health Department in late October, after it tried to determine the cause of the workers' illness.

and no longer use compressed air to remove brains.

I remember back in the 50’s, the men at a plant that produced a hormonal substance for cows called diethylsilbesterol started growing breasts.

So is it safe to assume that, at least this once, women and minorities were not hit hardest?

Can't use compressed air to remove something in a vacuum, though...

“The Mayo Clinic in Rochester reported the matter to the state Health

the workers’ illness.”

Good for The Mayo Clinic.
It’s not too much of a stretch that they may have been pressured to
warp their analysis or not report it.

It will be interesting to see if this America’s “mad pig disease” or
if the problems are from something workers picked up somewhere else.
Like...outside the USA...

That's the ticket! Why not wait until there are thousands of bodies as evidence that something was wrong. I love how these greedy corporations care about the safety of their consumers!

Yes it is real. Our local grocery once had some on the shelf but no one here was buying. My dad loved brains and eggs.

I’ve never tried any.
