Immigration Debate Unifies California GOP (Party Is Secure Borders Anti-Amnesty Alert)

So, too, has a striking increase in the number of Californians who blame illegal immigration for the state's problems.

"There is more unity among Republicans in this state on illegal immigration than on anything else, including taxes," said Tom Hudson, chairman of the Republican Party in Placer County, near Sacramento, one of the most conservative counties in the state.

Among the GOP candidates, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has seized the issue with vigor, and U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado has made border security the centerpiece of his long-shot campaign, even airing a campaign commercial comparing illegal immigration with terrorism.

In Wednesday's GOP debate, Romney sharply criticized Rudolph W. Giuliani for providing "sanctuary" to illegal immigrants while mayor of New York City. Giuliani responded by accusing Romney of hiring illegal immigrants to work at his home. Former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee chided Romney and Giuliani as recent converts on the topic.

The CAGOP is against amnesty and for secure borders. It has unified rather than split the state party.

Anything the California GOP agrees upon, instantly become a state secret anyway, so big wow. This is the last we’ll hear of this. The illegals must be thrilled.

You would think a story about immigration and the California GOP would at least mention Duncan Hunter.

Taxes, small government, homosexual agenda, illegal immigration. All fronts in the culture war with the Democrats.

Wouldn't ya tho? It was my reason for clicking on the thread. Scanning the article and not seeing his name was very suspicious.

I agree GoldStateGOP, but surely you realize as well as I do, that if Duncan Hunter ran for governor in California, the California GOP leadership would take a twelve month vacation leading up to election day. This what they have done when any other conservative ran over the last twelve years.

IMO, the California GOP leadership is dead to conservatism. The rank and file are pretty good, but the leadership might just as well apply for DNC recognition for the service they have provided to the leftist cause.

Yep. Tancredo needs to bow out and get behind Hunter, frankly

Duncan Hunter has actually done something about Illegal immigration by building a portion of the fence. Phil Watson missed that key element to the story.

Like Red Arnold and Company. The CAGOP leadership is more concerned how to appear more Democrat friendly and get plaudits in the MSM than to advance conservatism. That's why the state party has fallen on hard times. When has it championed causes lately near and dear to the hearts of the conservative base?

“Hispanics are not monolithic. Some of them happen to agree that something must be done about illegal immigration,” said Pacheco

I was in the family store yesterday and a hispanic man about 30 came in. He was talking to me while looking at some stuff and said he had just got back from visiting his kids up by San Jose. He started going off about illegals. Said his family had been here for over a hundred years and he hates what they have done to California. He was talking about all the freebies they get and said every one of them needs to be deported back to where they came from. He said he hates being lumped in with them as ‘hispanic’.
I have hispanic friends who feel the same way but it is refreshing to actually hear them come out and talk about it.
They are Americans who want the illegals expelled...period.

It hasn’t. That’s why the headline at the top of this thread made me burst out laughing. The California GOP leadership is a sick joke. And I might add, the national party leadership seems to be competing to see which can be the most liberal.

I would pass this thread completely if it didn’t make me so angry to see the leadership pull this type of ploy. It’s an attempt by the party leadership to gain support without doing a damned thing related to their proclamation.

It disgusts me.

Do you have any idea how few people understand this? It’s embarassing to read some of the assumptions made by folks who haven’t a clue that this is true.

I live in Bakersfield which is overrun with illegals. And I have been surprised by alot of my friends reactions to it. I have had friends of Mexican descent my whole life, natural here of course, and never until recently have they talked about it. The consensus is the same, they can’t stand the illegals.
I think overall it is the ‘fairness’ issue. They see the whole illegal thing as unfair to them and everyone else.
That and alot of them work for the fire department and they see on a first hand basis what they do to the areas they live in. At least 80% of their calls are medical aid calls.

So where do conservatives, especially those in California, go for “sanctuary” these days FRom all the loonies and illegals 8-?

Saw an article a couple days ago that says 10% of San Jose’s population is “undocumented”. Quite the sanctuary city, eh? More like enclave.

That would be fine, but we’ve got to get Hunter nominated first. Tanc should be helping.

Agree 100%.

Spoke to the state and county officials here on Tuesday. They are worthless and left me more discouraged than ever.
