Thompson Flier in Iowa Attacks Huckabee
blogs/abcnews.com ^ | 12/07/2007 | Christine Byun

Posted on 12/07/2007 5:13:08 PM PST by JRochelle

"Why is Mike Huckabee attacking Fred Thompson?" asks a new flier sent out in Iowa this week by the Thompson campaign.

But, it is the former Tennessee Senator and GOP hopeful who has launched criticism of former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., who leads Thompson in the most recent Iowa polls.

The fliers, which were mailed to Iowa voters Tuesday, tie the former Arkansas governor to another former Arkansas governor -- former President Bill Clinton.

The mailer features side-by-side profile pictures of both Huckabee and Bill Clinton, say the two "share a D lifetime rating for their tax and spend policies."

The flier also states Huckabee, "talks like a Republican but taxes like a Democrat," while outlining Thompson's tax relief plan, which includes several tax cuts.

This flier is the latest outreach to Iowa voters by the Thompson campaign as January 3rd approaches. Despite airing television ads in the state, Thompson has yet to gain momentum in the polls in Iowa.

He heads to Iowa today for his sixth visit to the early-voting state.

But headlines like this combined with his campaign playing an attack ad during the youtube debate are creating a strong impression that the Thompson campaign is getting desperate. Attacks are important but you don’t want them to be tied directly to your campaign at this stage of the game.

I saw that ad. I don't see how showing another candidate's stand on the issues IN HIS OWN WORDS, is considered an attack. Nothing untruthful was said about any of his opponents.

‘What indications are there that Huckabee’s supporters also support smaller, limited government?

There are plenty of good indications,”

So when you inform Huckabee of the fact that Huckabee was a big-time tax-and-spend panderer who added a whole new program (ArKids) and then raised the sales tax on taxpayers for it, and had a host of other sales taxes and bloated the Arkansas state budget .... what do they do?

“As a supporter of Fred for President, and Huckabee as his V.P., I’m trying to keep them from destroying each other. It’s getting more difficult.”

Since Thompson is a real conservative and Huckabee is a RINO tax-and-spend soft-on-crime soft-on-illegals fraud, and since they come from the same region so little ‘regional balance’ is gained ... the idea of having them on the same ticket is nuts.

Sorry, honest opinion.

Romney/Thompson otoh ...

Will you tell me why after the big announcement Fred tool a vacation and has not been seen in either of the first two states

You've obviously been reading lies printed about Fred by his opponents. During the week just following his announcement, he attended meetings with voters and fundraisers in several states. Just because the MSM ignored him, doesn't mean he wasn't working.

As for not being seen in either of the first two states, are you talking about Iowa and New Hampshire? He's been in BOTH states several times, giving interviews with local news people and attending gatherings of supporters in both states. He's also been to Florida, South Carolina, Mississippi, and California, to name a few.

In the words of Popeye, Huck is what he is, and that is a fraud. I wouldn’t want him anywhere near the ticket. He’s got more lies waiting to come out. Take a look at the guy and tell me when he’s telling the truth - it’s hard because so little truthfulness comes out of him.

I hate to mention the Clinton/Gore ticket, but it did prove that a Tennessee/Arkansas team is not a barrier to election.

A Thompson/Huckabee ticket is the most sensible combination for 2008.

The news about Huckabee's many clemencies for violent offenders has just begun. See below:

Prosecutor wants moratorium on clemencies

Friday, Jul 16, 2004

By Rob Moritz, Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney Larry Jegley on Thursday asked Gov. Mike Huckabee to stop granting clemencies for violent criminals because of the unprecedented number of early prisoner releases during the governor's eight years in office. Jegley said Huckabee has granted 669 clemencies since he became governor in 1996.

The previous three governors, Bill Clinton, Frank White and Jim Guy Tucker, granted a total of 507 clemencies during their 18 years in office, Jegley said. "In eight years the governor has granted 31 percent more (clemencies) than the previous three governors did in 18 years in office," Jegley said.

The prosecutor said he sent a letter to the governor Thursday asking for a moratorium on issuing of clemencies until the Legislature meets next January to reconsider the provision in the constitution that gives the governor that power. Jegley said he would like to see the constitutional provision changed to require the governor to explain his reasons for granting a clemency.

"Our fellow citizens are deserving of better," Jegley said. "They want transparency and accountability in this process. I know they deserve it."

Jim Harris, spokesman for the governor, criticized Jegley Thursday for releasing the contents of the letter to the media before Huckabee had had an opportunity to read it. The governor was in Orlando, Fla., on Thursday, attending a meeting of the Education Commission of the States.

"There are a number of good prosecutors in this state who are working closely with the governor," Harris said. "They contact him in a professional, businesslike manner and don't send their message to him through the news media."

Last week, Huckabee issued proclamations granting clemency for Denver Witham, who is serving life in prison for a 1974 murder in Saline County, and for John H. Claiborne, who is serving 375 years in prison for a 1994 kidnapping and armed robbery conviction in Pulaski County. Both men are still in state custody and are waiting parole hearings before the state Post Prison Transfer Board. A board spokeswoman said those hearings probably would be in August.

Also last week, the governor announced he planned commute Dennis Lewis' sentence of life in prison without parole to time served contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-release program. Lewis was convicted of capital murder in Washington County Circuit Court in 1975, for shooting a Fayetteville pawnshop owner. Earlier this month, Huckabee issued notice of intent to grant clemency to Glen Martin Green of Jacksonville, who was sentenced to life in prison in 1975 after pleading guilty to first-degree murder.

Jegley, who has criticized the governor several times over the years for granting clemencies for other violent offenders, said Thursday that he decided to write Huckabee after talking to the son of the victims who were kidnapped and robbed by Claiborne.

The son said his mother is still alive and is "scared to death" that Claiborne may be released soon, Jegley said. "The jury didn't sentence Claiborne to 340 years in prison so he could be released in 10 years for good behavior," Jegley said. "They sentenced him to 340 years in jail so he would stay their awhile."

Jegley said he would like the Legislature to change the current rules concerning the governor's power to grant clemency to include more public disclosure. "We the people have the right to an accounting from the governor when he chooses to go contrary to the people's decision to pardon a violent offender or commute a well-deserved punishment," Jegley said.

The prosecutor sent a copy of his letter to the governor to all legislators and asked them to consider his request. "The unprecedented number of pardons and commutations granted by this administration have greatly increased victims' fears, anxieties, and mistrust of the process," he said. According to the information he received from the secretary of state's office, Jegley said White, a Republican, granted 39 clemencies during his two years in office; Tucker granted 42 during his four years in office and Clinton granted 426 during his 12 years in office.

Last year, the governor was criticized for granting clemency to James Maxwell, a convicted murderer who worked as a trusty at the Governor's Mansion. Maxwell was later released. Earlier this year, Saline County Prosecutor Robert Herzfeld sued Huckabee when Huckabee granted clemency to Don Jeffers, also a convicted murderer. That clemency was voided after it was revealed that proper procedures weren't followed. Jeffers has reapplied for clemency.

In 2001, the governor granted clemency to Willie Way Jr., a convicted murderer, and to Donald Clark, a convicted burglar. Way had worked as a trusty at the mansion, and Clark was the stepson of a governor's office employee. In 1999, the governor supported the release of Wayne DuMond, convicted in the 1984 rape of a woman in Forrest City. DuMond later was convicted of killing a woman in Missouri.

Friend I don’t read those links because I know they will be biased. I’m not saying there won’t be truths there, but I’m not interested in partisan rants. My goodness, I don’t even visit Huckabee’s website because I know it will be extremely partisan.

I would rather support Thompson because I think he is better suited to lead in a war.

May ask why? I do not want to be attacked, but I would like to understand why anyone would think he would be a good war time president. When the best choice for that role would be Duncan Hunter or McCain (yuk) or even Rudy.

No flames please...just asking.

To be fair, I don’t think Huckabee would be where he is if the GOP and some of its members hadn’t pushed Giuliani to the front of the pack (slapping both social conservatives and small-government conservatives in the face). Social conservatives panicked, and Huckabee is the equal and opposite reaction.

I’m a small gov conservative, but I’ve noticed that the conventional wisdom is mostly wrong about social conservatives being for big government. Sure, some are, just like some libertarians are really libertines. Mostly, social conservatives and libertarian conservatives are natural allies, as Reagan understood.

I just hope we can remain allies. I don’t see how Huckabee or Giuliani can keep the coalition together. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Not parallel situations. Two southern candidates on the Dem ticket buys entry into a Repub stronhold. Two southern candidates on the Repub ticket doesn't help much, since the south is pretty solid red anyway. The republican ticket needs to shore up some swing regions, like the upper midwest and the rustbelt. MO, PA, OH, MN, or even WI, MI or CO.

I think getting Fred in the top position will be helpful in the states you mentioned. He has broader national appeal that the typical Southern politician, with his experience in Hollywood and D.C. and on the radio.

Huckabee is surging in several regions. I heard the McLaughlin Group panelists tonight say that Huckabee is peaking too early, but with the process so front-loaded now, the ideal timing of the peak is the trickiest part of this election.

The goal, of course, is to win the Electoral College vote against Hillary. It would be interesting to cross-tabulate the polling for all of the ticket combinations and see what the ideal matchup is. I don't have that info, so I'm speculating that it would be Thompson and Huckabee.

Fred Thompson calmly and thoroughly thinks about issues. He does not spout off sound bites. He knows who the main enemy is (Radical Islam). He does not condemn waterboarding like McCain. Fred says do whatever it takes to uncover the information to save American lives. He has extensive national security experience through top level clearances both in the Senate and when on a committee formed by Condi Rice. He has stated that Iranians do not like the current regime and that we ought to encourage the opposition there.

McCain was for the 'amnesty' bill; illegals are a national security issue. He does not seem to have the temperament to be President. There are many credible reports of his Hillary-like temper. Do you want a hothead at the helm?

I like Duncan Hunter on several key issues including national security. I am concerned about his big spending habits and his overruling the Pentagon on some projects which fizzled. He has been more of a gadfly than a leader in his many years in the House. Those are minor complaints compared to Rudy and McCain, so he would be acceptable.

Rudy is also likeable. His leadership in a city under siege was admirable. To me his Presidential credentials are largely an MSM construct. He was a mayor, not privy to national security other than that relevant to his area. He has shown major flaws of character both in his personal life and in public office. He did twists and turns about illegals and sanctuary cities which is a big security issue. I wouldn't trust him to stick to his word about anything, so I would not want him as President in wartime.
