Jim Gilchrist Gives Major Endorsement to Mike Huckabee

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

LITTLE ROCK , AR - In Iowa today, former Arkansas Governor and Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee received a major endorsement from Jim Gilchrist, founder of the multi-ethnic Minuteman Project.

Huckabee said he was honored to receive the endorsement. "No one can question Jim's commitment to this country and the immigration problem. He has mobilized a group of volunteers to go to the border and draw attention to the issue of immigration. All of us want a policy where people come to this country through the front door, not the back door," said Huckabee during a morning news conference.

Gilchrist added, "Governor Huckabee actually wrote a plan that I can embrace. I found his 'Secure America' plan would open the dialogue and help begin the process of solving the illegal immigration problem."

Gilchrist, who founded the Minuteman Project in 2004, said he appreciated Huckabee's plan to secure America 's borders.

Last week, Huckabee unveiled "The Secure America Plan: A Nine-Point Strategy for Immigration Enforcement and Border Security." Huckabee said he believes in adopting the best policy ideas to provide a "tough, equitable and comprehensive approach" to dealing with the current immigration crisis.

Huckabee said his goal is to implement a broad-based strategy that commits the resources of the federal government to the enforcement of our immigration laws and results in the attrition of the illegal immigrant population.

A 30-second television ad, called "Secure Borders," began airing in Iowa Monday to educate voters about Huckabee's call for a new immigration strategy, which begins with securing America 's borders.

I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like... victory.
-- Robert Duvall, Apocalypse Now

Gotta love watching freeper heads explode as they’ve spent weeks demonizing Huckabee as illegal alien loving open borders nut, only to see the FOUNDER of the Minutemen (who has done more than ANYONE ELSE in this nation to bring attention to securing the border) endorse Huckabee.

I guess the official line is that Jim Gilchrist, of all people, MUST be an illegal alien loving RINO sellout traitor too.

Heh.

The only thing better at this point would be Tancredo ending up as Huckabee’s running mate, which might drive the anti-Huckabee freepers to the funny farm.

Here’s the bottom line on the illegal immigration issue, folks:

EVERY one of the viable Republican candidates for President (as in, polling double digits and can actually WIN a primary, let alone the nomination) has bad things in their past on illegal immigration and none of ‘em can be trusted on this issue. The only difference between Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee here is that Huckabee’s supporters are honest enough to admit Huckabee’s past record on illegals is nothing to write home about, whereas the Fredheads seem to live in a fantasy world where Fred has always been of the Minuteman mindset and that Fred’s proposal is a Reaganesque idea showing he can be trusted completely to secure the border and save this nation. To her credit (since Chicagolady is NOT a Fred Thompson supporter), she at least realizes that a year ago, Fred was just as pro-amnesty as Huckabee was.

The only candidates with a SOLID, PROVEN record against illegal immigration are Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter, and neither of them has a snowball’s chance in hell of being nominated. You may not like that fact (I know I don’t, I think this nation really needs Tancredo in the White House), but we have to deal with the cards we’re being dealt.

If you wish to base your vote solely on the immigration issue and make a “statement” regardless of whether the candidate can win, then Tancredo’s your man. Tanc even stands alone as the only candidate who skipped the Univision GOP debate “en espanol” to enforce his principles that the U.S. should conduct all its business solely in English. Tancredo is chairman of the House immigration caucus, there is no dispute that stopping illegals has been his NUMBER #1 issue, even moreso than Hunter and Paul.

Now, if you want to cast your lot with a candidate who MIGHT actually make it to the oval office, you will have to select one who has been wrong in the past on one or two major issues. If you’re willing to hold your nose and give him the benefit of the doubt, you will find that Huckabee’s platform on immigration is even better than Fred’s. He has a much better proven record than Fred on stopping driver’s licenses to illegal aliens (Huck signed a bill in Arkansas that did exactly that), and on punish employers who hire illegal aliens (Fred voted NAY on such proposals in the Senate) Numbers USA has rated the candidates accordingly.

That’s why Jim Gilchrist is on Huck’s side now — Gilchrist GETS it.

Of all the candidates who could theoretically WIN the Republican nomination, Huckabee has the least leaky boat, and if Huckabee keeps his campaign promise, we have completely secured the border with a fence by mid 2010 (and if Huck breaks his promise, he’s a one-termer). That’s why Gilchrist has gotten aboard the Huckabee express, while Fred “say whatever people want to hear” Thompson has the support of such open borders types as Spencer Abraham and George P. Bush (ah, the irony of the Fredheads saying “Huckabee is just like Bush only worse on immigration”, when Bush’s open borders “latino” nephew is beating down the door to elect Fred)

Here is a look at the viable candidate’s ratings on immigration. Judge for yourself if Gilchrist is right to support Huckabee over the likes of Giuliani and McCain:

Sure I believe that, you can read can't you?

WALLACE: Let's turn to immigration, because you put out a new immigration plan this week. You called for building...

HUCKABEE: Yes.

WALLACE: ... a border fence, for cracking down on employers, for telling illegals to go home.

But last year in an interview, you said something somewhat different. You said this, "I think that the rational approach is to find a way to give people a pathway to citizenship."

Governor, in your new plan, the only path is to go home and to get on the back of the line, which, of course, would mean years of waiting. Why the change? HUCKABEE: Well, I don't think there's an inconsistency. When I said a pathway, I didn't say what the pathway was.

I now believe that the only thing the American people are going to accept — and, frankly, the only thing that really makes sense — is a pathway that sends people back to the starting point.

But this idea of the waiting years — no, I don't agree with that. In fact, look, if we can get a credit card application done within hours, if we can get passports done within days, if we can transact business over the Internet any place in the world within seconds, do a background check instantaneously — it's our government that has failed and is dysfunctional.

It shouldn't take years to get a work permit to come here and pick lettuce. So part of the plan that I have is that we seal the borders. You don't have amnesty and sanctuary cities. You do have a pathway that gets you back home. But that pathway to get back here legally doesn't take years. It would take days, maybe weeks, and then people could come back in the workforce.

And here we have the same amnesty plain that jorge had, we'll have amnesty we will just call it something else.

Hunter and Tancredo are not even mentioned. This is probably another liberal wack job at republicans.

I think there was more going on here than just an endorsement by Gilchrist. I hope it gets exposed.

Gilchrist must be wishing he’d waited until after the debate. He’s not doing himself any favors tying himself to a clown like Huckabee.

I find it quite amusing watching some Freepers go off the handle and backstab former heroes.

Tells a lot that they are directed by emotion and not reason.

Reminds me of Bill Clinton touting his job creation successes while running Arkansas (and failing to mention that most of them were pennies an hour slave labor plucking chicken feathers at Tyson factories).

JIM GILCHRIST - BACKGROUND INFO

BRIEF BIO
James "Jim" Gilchrist is the cofounder, along with Chris Simcox, of the Minuteman Project, a group whose aim is to prevent illegal immigration across the U.S.'s southern border. The duo later split and went their seperate ways. In May 2007, Gilchrist noted in an interview: "I’m the President and always was.. I have the right to the web site, the bank account, everything".
Gilchrist unsuccessfully ran as an American Independent Party candidate for the United States House of Representatives representing California's 48th Congressional District to replace Republican Chris Cox, who resigned to become Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In the low-turnout open primary for Cox's seat held on October 4, 2005, Gilchrist finished behind two Republicans but ahead of all other candidates, including Democrats. He received 14.8% of the vote (a total of 13,423 votes). He was the only one running under his party, and therefore automatically advanced into the run-off. Gilchrist lost to Republican John Campbell in the December 6 general election, receiving 25.5% (26,507) of the vote. Campbell received 44.4% (46,184), Steve Young (Democrat) 27.8% (28,853), Bea Tiritilli (Green) 1.4% (1,430), Bruce Cohen (Libertarian) 0.9% (974).
Gilchrist holds a B.A. in newspaper journalism from the University of Rhode Island, a B.S. in business administration from California State Polytechnic University, and an MBA in taxation from Golden Gate University. He is a former newspaper reporter and a retired California CPA (Certified Public Accountant) who let his CPA licence expire in 1993 soon after he declared personal bankruptcy in 1992.
Gilchrist is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and recipient of the Purple Heart award for wounds sustained while serving with an infantry unit in Vietnam, 1967 - 1969.
He currently resides in Aliso Viejo, California, with his wife, Sandy.

ISSUES
Gilchrist has provided conservative opinions on various issues but emphasized that immigration and the border is the primary issue from which the others flow. He has even stated "John McCain should have forfeited his right to run for president on the Republican Party the moment he put his name on immigration legislation with Sen. Ted Kennedy."
On other issues, Gilchrist holds conservative views across the board, particularly on education and health care. He supports tax cuts, repeals and Medicare and Social Security reform. Gilchrist was registered with the American Independent Party, the California affiliate of the Constitution Party, but has since re-registered as a Republican, and is an adamant immigration enforcement, law enforcement and military advocate.
Gilchrist is also a devout Roman Catholic. As such, he is strongly opposed to and critical of abortion.

I’d love to tell Gilchrist to his face what I think of him and his endorsement. I wonder how many people this scum conned out of their $$ for a cause he had no interest in supporting ? Around these here parts, we’d call that fraud. Anybody who contributed to his outfit should sue his ass from here to Guadalajara.
