DETROIT — When General Motors Corp. pulls the cover off a new supercharged version of the Corvette at the Detroit auto show next month, it will unveil a performance car designed to rival or better even the fastest, most expensive exotic cars from Europe.

But the Corvette's chief engineer says the 2009 Corvette ZR1 may be the last in a long tradition of Detroit performance cars, endangered by stronger federal fuel economy regulations and limits on carbon dioxide emissions.

Love sports/muscle cars, always have. Hoping to be in one of the new Camaros by 2010.

If the new emission stadards are successful in killing off the muscle car, what about full size trucks and SUV's? They are by far, less efficient then any sports car. Hell, my 2000 Z28 got a minimum of 20mpg.

Better get ready to kiss your favorite vehicles good bye.

Only if you insist on going on making dinosaur “musclecars”. A Honda Civic with a 300 horse engine and everything possible replaced with carbonfibre would weigh in at 1300 lbs and blow the doors straight off any vette.

SUV and PU’s will be going high bred adding
$5-7000 to the price tag - mostly for nothing gained and lousy performance.

The current Corvette gets 26 MPG HWY. No full size SUV can touch that.

Who needs freedom, anyway, when we have to devote ourselves to ending global warming. Or is it global cooling? \

Anyway, who needs freedom?

Bullcr@p!

This is exactly the same tripe that Detroit spewed back in the 1970’s.

I was thinking the same thing. Carmakers have done quite a lot with a 4 banger. I have a MazdaSpeed 3...263 HP, 28 MPG highway.

It’s not a Corvette but I can hold my own. ;)

What a silly looking car. There are a million conversions that can be faster than a vette, so?

Hey look at my super fast Civic! Excuse me while I laugh...

"High-performance vehicles such as this may actually be legislated out of existence,"

GM scare tactics aimed towards motor heads.

The ‘green’ lunacy is not just confined to the States
.......................................................

EUROPEAN luxury cars are likely to cost significantly more from 2012 after the European Commission unveiled emissions targets that will add an average €1300 ($A2180) to the price of all cars made in Europe.

In sharp contrast, the US Federal Government on Wednesday overruled an attempt by California to introduce its own emissions laws in what is seen as an attempt by the Bush Administration to help the ailing Detroit-based manufacturers General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.

The European car makers have described the proposed emissions laws as unfair, and claim the cost of meeting them will undermine the industry’s competitive position and could see manufacturing move to lower-cost regions.

A proposed system of fines for manufacturers that do not meet the target would further increase prices.

They’ve been claiming the end of the muscle cars was near since the 70s.

I wish they would not talk about this. It swings the light of day towards us musclecar drivers and away from SUVs.

I get terrible gas mileage on premium gas. And I love it.

and a 300 hp vette with carbon fibre everything would blow the doors off any civic in existance. You need to compare apples to apples.

You also might be able to pick up a chick that did keep your bal*s in her purse.

A lot of businesses of all sizes use these full size trucks to haul equipment , trailers etc. Better get ready to kiss our economy good bye for a liberal/socialist lie called global warming. I never would have imagined that I would live to see America go this way where muscle cars, full size pick ups and light bulbs would be banned by the government because of a hoax called global warming. Liberals/Democrats especially those in the media are sick, evil creatures and they are ruining this greatest civilization ever , the United States.
