Late-Breaking Surge for Thompson
National Review Online ^ | 2 January 2008 | Peter Robinson

Posted on 01/02/2008 3:09:35 PM PST by big'ol_freeper

The latest news from Iowa? According to Zogby’s latest—and I quote: “Sen. Fred Thompson…has seen a late-breaking surge.” (Rich notes the same poll below.)

What’s going on here? My guess is that there are whole lot of Iowa Republicans who have about the same attitude that David Limbaugh displayed in his column yesterday:

Fred is the only [candidate] I don't have major reservations about….I find his lack of "fire in the belly" refreshing. He strikes me as one of the few presidential candidates since Ronald Reagan whose primary motivation is not personal aggrandizement but rather serving and leading the nation in very troubled and dangerous times. I see him as almost being drafted into this project, and his refusal to drool publicly over the prospect of becoming the most powerful man in the world is positively delightful.

When did Fred Thompson ever say that, or even insinuate that he would quit? I'm pretty sure that the press would be all over that if he had said that.

Your source for that quote will be greatly appreciated.

You both don't like the way Fred has campaigned but you like his message? Well, shouldn't that be enough? Conservatives have complained about not having a conservative candidate for years. We have a very good one now.

Everyone is an expert on what other people should do, especially so in elections. It seems to me it takes great courage on Fred's part to do things his way and not listen to the chattering class. It has served him quite well to this point.

You can complain about a few positions or stances, but Fred is a conservative and a federalist. That stands out. What also stands out is that he is his own man, a man that will not be swayed by pundits or conventional wisdom. That is precisely what we need fiscally, socially and especially militarily going forward.

Fred has most definitely answered his countries call and I applaud him for that.

I find his lack of "fire in the belly" refreshing.

The MSM love to dig up dirt on all Republicans, especially conservative Republicans. That fact that this is the strongest criticism they have been able to make against Fred should be very encouraging.

Fred said he will quit if not placing in top two. Looks like it’s going to happen any way.

Site your source please!

I’m for Fred.

I don’t think being President is fun. I think it absolutely sucks and if a person’s world revolves around becoming President (or any political office), I question their motivation.

I’ve held back and I’ve considered all the Republicans.

I’m for Fred.

Technically, Bill Clinton came in 4th in ‘92 if you count “Uncommitted” as a candidate.

Otherwise, you’re absolutely right except about Thompson not coming in third.

I have no idea who will come in third.
