Late-Breaking Surge for Thompson
National Review Online ^ | 2 January 2008 | Peter Robinson

The latest news from Iowa? According to Zogby’s latest—and I quote: “Sen. Fred Thompson…has seen a late-breaking surge.” (Rich notes the same poll below.)

What’s going on here? My guess is that there are whole lot of Iowa Republicans who have about the same attitude that David Limbaugh displayed in his column yesterday:

Fred is the only [candidate] I don't have major reservations about….I find his lack of "fire in the belly" refreshing. He strikes me as one of the few presidential candidates since Ronald Reagan whose primary motivation is not personal aggrandizement but rather serving and leading the nation in very troubled and dangerous times. I see him as almost being drafted into this project, and his refusal to drool publicly over the prospect of becoming the most powerful man in the world is positively delightful.

Listening to Fred on Mark Levin’s radio show now.

He sounds very genuinely upbeat and, dare I say, confident about doing well tomorrow and having the momentum he needs to raise money and succeed in the following primaries.

Fred said he will quit if not placing in top two.

That is not what he said.

Fred’s make or break state is probably South Carolina.

I have been saying this for the last two weeks. Fred will surprise in Iowa and make a strong showing. When he gets to South Carolina he will start separating himself from the rest. Huckabee..well, he will fade. Romney will be embarrassed in New Hamphshire and it will effectively end his campaign. McCain will challenge Fred..unfortunately.

I got your surge right here!

The polling in this matter is ridiculous - another example of precision outstripping accuracy. I do not see any measures of likely participation akin to prior voting that allow the pollsters to accurately stratify the sample. Much of this “information” is actually noise.

Instead of quoting a single line, quote the main items:

“On the Republican side, Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, gained a bit on Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas. Huckabee cumulative three-day tracking total equaled 28% support among likely Republican caucus–goers, while Romney moved up from 25% to 26% support. Arizona Sen. John McCain remained in third place at 12%, tied with former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who has seen a late-breaking surge. Among Democrats, 5% were yet undecided just three days ahead of the caucuses. Among Republicans, 6% were yet unsure.”

“Huckabee’s support spans all age groups, but he is particularly strong among voters under age 30.”

BOF - I wouldn’t call 12% much of a surge - with all due respect to Senator Thompson. He needs more than a third place tie.

I want to add that in addition to seeing the media eat some crow, I’d like the same for some doubting Freepers. They know who they are.

Fred probably is surging but I am not making any prognosticaions. However, I do believe you are wrong about his saying he will quit if he does not get second. He has refused to address this issue.
