Late-Breaking Surge for Thompson
National Review Online ^ | 2 January 2008 | Peter Robinson

Posted on 01/02/2008 3:09:35 PM PST by big'ol_freeper

The latest news from Iowa? According to Zogby’s latest—and I quote: “Sen. Fred Thompson…has seen a late-breaking surge.” (Rich notes the same poll below.)

What’s going on here? My guess is that there are whole lot of Iowa Republicans who have about the same attitude that David Limbaugh displayed in his column yesterday:

Fred is the only [candidate] I don't have major reservations about….I find his lack of "fire in the belly" refreshing. He strikes me as one of the few presidential candidates since Ronald Reagan whose primary motivation is not personal aggrandizement but rather serving and leading the nation in very troubled and dangerous times. I see him as almost being drafted into this project, and his refusal to drool publicly over the prospect of becoming the most powerful man in the world is positively delightful.

You said:
“If you have children, do you let the others babysit them on the street, in the malls, or at the roller skating rink or do you include them in various interests beyond the video game and tv at home while letting others do your job while you hang out on websites?”

Well..let’s see....I have only one ‘child’. He is all grown up now and he would be any conservative mom’s dream. He has worked in the policy end of conservative poltics(in DC and the capitol of our state) before and after he graduated a christian college and now works for BIG OIL.....LOL!! He still wants to join the military and I still am scared for him to do so. He promised me one year in the working world before he joined...that’s our deal.

He played sports for many years and that’s all he cared about. He got his politics not from ‘sitting’ and watching TV or being indoctrinated...but from waching his parents in actions and the truth of what they spoke.

I really don’t like being at odds with my fellow freepers...so can we give this witch hunt a rest PM?

I will be more than happy to do so and apologize for my flippant remarks thus far.

Hillary Clinton’s message to Iowa voters was 2 minutes. She was focused and direct, compact. She hit all of her points hard. That’s the way it should be done.

That's cause she has nothing of any value to say. She just mouths platitudes.

Probably true due to the nature of the beast...what is it only about 4% of population will attend caucusses?

I do like that. Thanks for sharing.
Wish that had been his message in the debates too.
I do wonder if he’s really driving home his experience as chairman on the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and as chairman of the International Security and Proliferation Advisory Board at the State Department. These words ought to be the first out of his mouth right after “Hi, I’m Fred Thompson” every time he speaks.

LOL...figures don’t lie but liers figure!

Nevertheless if Thomson pulls a surprise surge, it’s all good since he is my 2nd choice after Romney. Either one will make a fine fine president.

Well..a monotone drawl that other people share might work at the PTA, but it is not going to work on the national scene imho.

No conservatives that I know are ‘ditching’ anything in favor of ‘fluff’. They are just realists and unless Fred picks up the ball...someone else is going to slam into homeplate.

Well I know Fred’s wife has been running his campaign.

You lost any credibility you might have had with that statement. Jeri helped in the first few weeks, but has been with him at his side campaigning when she could, over the last two months. She's not running anything.

Then who the hell is running it, and why are they giving Fred such bad advice?

Yes, Mark had Fred on at the beginning of his show tonight. He made it very clear that he likes and endorses Fred without actually saying so.

Fred was great on his show, I only caught the last 7 or 8 minutes ... he was on right at the first.

“Thanks for your comments. Maybe if he were my first choice, I could ignore some of his supporters. I’ve never had huge reservations about any of them except Rudy Giuliani and John McCain. Mike Huckabee isn’t wearing well with time, but I could still support him against Hillary. The sad thing is that most of these blow-hards have probably never made a phone call or knocked on a door in support of any candidate. They are lazy cowards who hide behind their keyboards, do nothing to advance any campaign, and think of themselves as great activists. They will keep some of us from lifting a finger for Fred Thompson if he happens to win the nomination.”

It’s just a big circle jerk echo chamber for wimps and wusses.

One good thing about Fred getting out of the race is that Free Republic can get back to normal.

I feel the same way and I don’t have to attack fellow Freepers to buck myself up.

Why so bitter? I am a huge Fred supporter and have never typed anything against any of your candidates.

To reject someone because of the attitude of his supporters is a little shallow, dontcha think?

Not everybody thinks Thompson the best choice, too.

When is Super Duper Tuesday? Have any of those states moved their primaries this year? I just found out a couple of weeks ago that MA has move ours up to Feb. 5th.

Feb. 5 is Super Tuesday. You can get all the nut-and-bolts details on the primaries here.
