Late-Breaking Surge for Thompson
National Review Online ^ | 2 January 2008 | Peter Robinson

The latest news from Iowa? According to Zogby’s latest—and I quote: “Sen. Fred Thompson…has seen a late-breaking surge.” (Rich notes the same poll below.)

What’s going on here? My guess is that there are whole lot of Iowa Republicans who have about the same attitude that David Limbaugh displayed in his column yesterday:

Fred is the only [candidate] I don't have major reservations about….I find his lack of "fire in the belly" refreshing. He strikes me as one of the few presidential candidates since Ronald Reagan whose primary motivation is not personal aggrandizement but rather serving and leading the nation in very troubled and dangerous times. I see him as almost being drafted into this project, and his refusal to drool publicly over the prospect of becoming the most powerful man in the world is positively delightful.

I see you are quite new. Don’t be sorry just give us your source. You see here at FR we don’t just spout BS when it can be referenced back or disclaimed. Now it seems you are the only one who “knows” this. How ‘bout a source or just go away.

I agree with you, if Fred finishes a strong 3rd, and if Romney wins Iowa, he will be in a better shape than ‘yesterday’. He will then need to compete against Huck in SC.

The bottom line is Fred has to finish in 20%+ to stay competitive.

Why would it not propel him to 3rd. He’s in 3rd now.

I am amazed how many ON THIS BOARD are just dancing to the media’s tune. Some freepers decry the media in one breath, and base their whole thinking on it at the same time.

Wake up folks; the reason you’re hearing nothing about Fred is that they know he can run over them all like a Hummer.

There are many Freepers even that don't get it. Not sure if they buy into the media hype or if they may themselves be pseudo media types posing as Freepers. Heck there are out and out liberals on here and they pose as moderates.

Hey newbie, I don’t know which liberal RINO you’re in here trolling for, but I suspect you won’t last long.

Do you believe up to 45% of independents and GOPers will caucus in democratic race? That’s what the gold-standard DRM poll was telling us.

If that’s the case, maybe Fred will do better than expected since thos indys will not want to spoil GOP race.

Fred said he will quit if not placing in top two. Looks like it’s going to happen any way.

Source?

Here is the entire piece from CBS News ( he did not say he would quit if he didn't finish second):

Thompson: "I Need to Come in Second"

" To finish second in Iowa, Thompson has a lot of ground to make up. While Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are both polling in the 27 to 28 percent range, Thompson is neck and neck with John McCain at around 11 percent. When asked if he would stay in the race if he finished third, he said “I’m not going to talk about things like that.”

He did talk about the consistency of his presidential run. “Let the political world swirl around me and let everyone run their attack ads and spend their money and spin their wheels and all that,” he said. “But I’m going to be the same. It’s worked for me pretty well in my career, being Fred, and I’m going to continue to be Fred.”

If we look at the conservtive principles of those running Fred and Hunter are the only ones. They have lived them life-long....unlike the johnny-vote-for-me-comelatelys......I will stick with a tried and true friend. A REAL conservative. Who cares who the MSM wants and is promoting.
