Dr. Phil cancels Britney Spears show

Dr. Phil's planned sitdown Monday with Britney Spears' parents dissolved into accusations he was exploiting the troubled singer's emotional crackup.

The TV shrink insisted he canceled the taping with Jamie and Lynne Spears "because the Spears situation is too intense at this time, and out of consideration to the family."

A source close to Dr. Phil McGraw said it was Britney's parents who cut him off, furious he blabbed about her mental state after visiting her in the psych ward at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

"As soon as Jamie realized Dr.Phil was making public statements about Britney, including assessments of her condition, he got angry," the source told Life & Style magazine. "He started making phone calls to everybody in the family, telling them not to cooperate."

The show was to air Tuesday.

Britney Spears was held in the hospital overnight after going berserk when ex-hubby Kevin Federline's bodyguards came to pick up her two baby boys. She was said to be stunned by Dr. Phil's visit and many of McGraw's psychiatric colleagues blasted him.

McGraw - now called Dr. Shill by some critics - went on CBS' sister show "Entertainment Tonight" to defend himself.

I feel very sorry for her. The devils in the corporate MTV music machine that push sex and drugs on pre-teens and teens claimed another victim.

I think Britney has organic brain damage from ingesting pills with alcohol and will never truly recover. I hope I'm wrong about that, but I doubt I am.

You may be quite correct.

Assuming "Doctor" Phil is actually a licensed medical practitioner of some type (which I find highly dubious).

I don't know if he's still licensed to practice, but here's some information:

Dr. Phil McGraw received his master's and Ph.D. in psychology at the University of North Texas. In 1979, Dr. Phil opened a practice with his father.

Dr. Phil soon realized one-on-one therapy wasn't for him. He then launched a popular self-motivation seminar called Pathways.

In 1989, he built a company called Courtroom Sciences. The venture helped trial lawyers build cases using psychology by conducting mock trials, behavioral analysis, jury selection and mediation.

In the fall of 2002, he launched his own nationally syndicated series, Dr. Phil.

Along with conducting motivational seminars across the country, he is the author of four New York Times bestsellers.

I totally agree with your assessment of the Keifer Sutherland/"Jack Bauer" situation. If ever a man has gone out of his way to protect the income of those with whom he works by voluntarily adding on more jail time to his sentence so as not to affect filming of his t.v. show and thereby affect those actors/crew connected to/with it, he has. Whatever his personal demons are, in spite of his fame, good looks, success, he has made a conscious effort to be a stand-up Man about it and help himself. He doesn't belong in the same list of nutters that was previously mentioned. He deserves credit for his effort.
