I agree with Charles Krauthammer. In all likelihood, Barack Obama will be our first black President. He's just very likeable and that will be enough. His content-free campaign IS a source of appeal to people. I'm not thinking of Pierre Trudeau but instead Ehud Olmert with a strong dose of charisma.

...”In 1972, voters went to the polls to vote for a guy they knew very little about. That brought us the malaise years, the incredibly destructive Carter administration.”...

Richard Nixon won in 1972, destroying George McGovern. Jimmy Carter was elected in 1976, much to our eventual detriment. He presided over the first actions in the islamic war against the USA, on November 4, 1979.

Yes, I knew that the Mayan calendar predicts doom in the near future. I'm reminded of John Maynard Keynes' comment, "In the long run, we're all dead." It worked for him--he's dead.

The Democrats can blame the lunar eclipse on Bush, just like they blamed Hurricane Katrina on him, and promise to protect Americans from future eclipses. Of course that will entail billions in new spending programs.

Well, Karl Rove’s weather machine must have control over the lunar cycles, so it makes perfect sense to blame Bush!

some folks use that bait here to stifle criticism of Neoconservatism.

I don’t care a wit.

Neoconservatism as presented by many including the otherwise honorable gentleman who wrote this article is precisely why Conservatism today is so fractured and almost unrecognizable.

I like Krauthammer’s war views but his cultural views are lacking. I have read him since he was a liberal contributor at the New Republic with Fred Barnes, Mort, PJ and others.

Nearly all these leading Neoconservative pundits are reformed 60s and 70s liberals (some even from earlier liberal incarnations) and whether quite a few are Jewish or not does not and will never inoculate them from criticism and nor should it.

It’s his pontificating that is painful to endure, not his halting speech pattern.

That’s a good one!

Someone needs to collect all those on a FR home page or thread.

I don’t really care all that much. As for Darth Maul, the name was changed for a reason. Derth is the precise word I chose to use.

Can’t believe I put ‘72 in there. Who could forget McGovern in ‘72?

You are correct but they are buying him just like they buy Oil of Olay and Viagra

Not because they read up on the subject but because the TV tells them what they want to hear.

In 1972 Nixon won his second term. By 1976 he was gone and Ford was the GOP nominee against the unknown from GA Jimmy Carter. You have Carter winning in ‘72. But your point about unknowns getting elected is undiminished by that...

I was just kidding Bert. You’re right. This guy is the perfect sound byte candidate, nothing of substance to confuse the folks.
