I see loyalty oaths and pledges of allegiance as window dressing at best;those who are for you don’t need to swear ,and those against you are proven willing to falsely swear for you.
Failing to take an oath to support and defend the california constitution? Whats wrong with that? :-)
Quakers have religious objections to swearing oaths of ANY kind, not just ones about taking up arms. Quakers and others of similar religious bent are usually allowed to affirm rather than swear. I don’t know what happened here....
Not all. Some Quakers managed to serve the defense non-violently. A number of Quakers have served as unarmed medics on the front lines, most notably in WW2. Unfortunately, we see more of the sanctimonious anti-war peacenik types
If she is a true, religious pacifist, that is one thing. And as a practical matter, would you want such a pacifist bearing arms anyway? As you noted, she gave an honest answer. How many faux pacifists are out there who praise “nonviolence” one minute and then the next minute they are praising terrorists or violent, war-like dictatorships? People like that are not really pacifists, they are on the side of the enemy. This teacher seems like a pacifist of the true sort and should not be treated almost like a criminal.
By 1700 Quakers around Elkton MD and in SE Pennsylvania had literally driven the earlier Scandinavian settlers OUT of those areas through a campaign of constant harrassment ~ not much known about it but it appeared to include enough violence that the Scandinavians brought some pretty tough Lutheran ministers to the area to "fight" on their behalf ~ and that didn't refer to bringing lawsuits either.
The Scandinavians were ultimately swamped by new Quaker imports and relocated to York PA, founding that town and setting up a series of settlements there and in Western Maryland.
The "no religious test" clause in the US Constitution refers to the practice of the Quakers who ran Colonial Pennsylvania of forcing (suspected)"others" to swear oaths to the effect they'd adhere to Quaker beliefs and standards to hold public office.
"Others" were not, of course, eligible to hold public office in Pennsylvania.
This lady in CA doesn't know her own sect's history, nor does the court. She doesn't have a philosophical leg to stand on.
Good grief, I never knew that either. Who’d ‘a thunk?
who was a friend of my grandpa.
You made me smile this morning. You made me think of grandpa. Thank you.
Glad it worked out that way. And now you've made me think of mine.
York was not a concientious objector. His mother and minister filled out the the papers but he didn’t sign them.
With “Friends” like those, we really don’t need enemies. Pun intended.
And they came back and still were not willing to defend the peace at home. Being unwilling to deal violence in defense of others is no virtue. My uncle served as a medic during WWII. He didn’t want to do it, he was volunteered because he was a commercial fisherman. Apparently the Army felt that butchers and fishermen used to cutting animal flesh made the transition to medic easily. No big deal was ever made over him.
Really? How super. ":^)
