CA: Instructor fired over loyalty oath reinstated

HAYWARD, Calif. -- A Quaker math instructor who was fired by Cal State East Bay after she refused on religious grounds to sign a state loyalty oath has been reinstated, university officials said Friday.

Marianne Kearney-Brown, a pacifist, was concerned that signing the oath to "support and defend" the California and U.S. constitutions "against all enemies, foreign and domestic" could commit her to take up arms. She was fired Feb. 28 after she inserted the word "nonviolently" before "support and defend" and signed that version.

She’ll just let someone else do it violently...

Pacifists. Perfectly safe as long as someone else is willing to carry the load such safety requires.

Just on my brief read, I don’t see why she was fired in the first place. She did affirm her loyalty to both constitutions, but she honestly honored the religious convictions of her church with the insertion of “non-violently”. It’s a greater degree of honesty than we get from most of our elected officials, much less college professors.

Pacifists are peace thieves.

I don’t have any problem with Quakers. I think it’s foolish to be a pacifist under even defensive circumstances, but if a person has honest religious convictions that prevent any form of violence, they shouldn’t be forced into it.

Plus, I’m suspicious of loyalty oaths in general. I don’t know how much loyalty they really guarantee. Not much, I suspect.

I agree. While I wouldn’t force pacifists to take up arms, neither would I be willing to grant them the protection of the arms of the brave.

They want to opt out? Fine. Don’t come whining to those who are willing to fight, when the bad guys come calling.

Sorry, I’m with her.

Why the hell do you have to swear to take up arms, if required to, just to teach math?

She should be commended for taking the oath seriously enough to respect the commitment to it, Not like those who blithely put their hand on the Bible and swear to uphold the Constitution and defend the country but then trample on it (John McCain), or let illegals aliens flood across our borders (Bush) or just subvert the legal system (clinton).

Pacifists, show 'em the back of your hand and they'll fall in line.

For religious reason, I can respect that.

The oath did not require her to take up arms.

She is using this issue for political grandstanding.

How many college professors employed by the state of California that have taken this oath would up hold it by taking up arms?

I note the article says the oath was adopted during a period of “anti-communist hysteria”. The LA Times is still just a propaganda outlet for Reds -— even this long after the wall has fallen!
