Congressman Emanuel Cleaver: Whites like 'articulate' Barack Obama
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | April 1, 2008

Posted on 04/02/2008 7:34:07 PM PDT by george76

A congressman backing Hillary Rodham Clinton says white voters are supporting Barack Obama based on the view that he is articulate and his election would allow the nation ‘‘to get this boogeyman called race behind us.’’

Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who is black, told Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that Obama ‘‘is articulate. In the black tradition, he would probably be mediocre.’’

‘‘For white Americans, it’s like, this guy can speak,’’ Cleaver said in the radio interview. ‘‘If you put him on a level with a lot of other African-American public speakers, he may not even measure up.’’

But Cleaver also conceded in the interview that he thinks Obama will win the White House.

Cleaver represents a majority white congressional district in Kansas City where Obama won a majority of the vote in Missouri’s presidential primary. He is the only ordained minister in Congress and still preaches every Sunday at his mostly black Kansas City church.

Cleaver said he was ‘‘outraged over the outrage’’ at the controversy over Obama’s former pastor, who was criticized for making racially charged comments in church sermons. Cleaver praised Obama’s Chicago church for having a ‘‘long and rich history of being involved in the betterment of the Chicago black community.’’

Last year, Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., was criticized when he called Obama ‘‘the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.’’

Hell — I haven’t found a single aspect of Obama or his campaign to “like”....

We will see just how articulate Obama is, if he EVER has to answer any of the tough questions without a script or teleprompter..

I must admit, he is pretty articulate with respect to explaining what a moron he is.

They want everyone to think white people are stupid. I know enough about Hillary and Obama to say neither should even be considered for President much less actually be President. And that goes for McCain too.

We should be getting these people unnominated as they are not the peoples’ choice.

You mean like the *current* occupant of the White House does? Sorry, but when he is at a press conference and taking questions, the responses can be downright painful to watch and listen to.

Beaver Cleaver is ticked off that Obama talks like a normal person, not like some blowhard preacher-man, using church-cadence.

Is getting them unnominated something like getting an annulment?

Ummm...I guess Barak H. Obama can try to explain why Marxism is a good thing, in his best voice and scripted, sincere looks into the camera.

Emmanuel Cleaver lost a very large proportion of his income when George Bush was elected President. The Clinton Machine was very, very good for him. He wants to get back on the gravy train and will do anything to make it so.

"I think for many white Americans, they are looking at Barack Obama and saying 'This is our chance to demonstrate that we have been able to get this boogeyman called race behind us,'" Cleaver said. "And so they are going to vote for him, whether he has credentials or not, whether he has any experience — I think all that’s out the window."

Must be talking about Democrats. Republicans have been beyond the race issue for years.

He's no Clinton, and for that I'm thankful.
He's no O'bama and for that I'm very thankful.

If you listen, you'll hear unvarnished truth.

The question is....can you recognize it?

Sometimes, the truth is painful to listen to....suck it up.

he is articulate and his election would allow the nation ‘‘to get this boogeyman called race behind us.’’

Unfortunately, I'm afraid his view is shared by many Americans. They think that by voting Obama, their ancestors' sin of racism (and whatever structural legacy that still exist today) will be taken away.

Is there ANYTHING that we whites do that isn’t framed by blacks as being race-based?

Oops, my sentence above is race-based. Shame on me.
