The vision of airplanes rumbling slowly over San Francisco, spraying a pesticide mist on parks and playgrounds, has now mobilized one of the most effective lobbying groups in the world.
Moms.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture's plan to eradicate the light brown apple moth with aerial spraying over the city this summer was already in an uphill fight. But when 100 or so mothers and kids showed up at City Hall on Monday afternoon with signs like "Keep Your Spray Off My Baby," it was clear that the battle had entered a new phase.
"Nothing gets people more irate than a government institution spraying their kids from a plane," said Jared Blumenfeld, director of the San Francisco Department of the Environment. "It's a bad movie. And nobody wants to be in that movie."
Lynn Murphy, a mother of two, was at Monday's rally, somewhat surprised to be chanting "Stop the Spray" along with everyone else.
"I don't consider myself an activist," said Murphy, who lives a few blocks from Golden Gate Park, where the most moths have been found so far in the city. "But when it comes down to your children and protecting your family, it seems so much more urgent. I never thought I would be talking to my 4-year-old and telling her that we are going up to the state Capitol to talk to politicians."

You know that's like mixing an acid and base. The meltdown is inevitable, if mildly amusing.

It’s the Migden wing of the party—big tent, ya know?
malathion is a guaranteed crowd gatherer...
Where are you getting this "once a month for 10 years"?
The law authorizing this (SB 556) becomes inoperative on October 1, 2009, and expires (automatically repealed) on January 1, 2010.
There are already quarantines in place--do you want those to extend to all California? And allow it to continue to other states? When we can no longer produce food, then what?
There are still people with kids living in San Francisco?
BTW, did you know your area is positively inundated with dihydrogen monoxide? That stuff is positively deadly if you breathe it in. It also eats right through solid iron!
You were previously involved in the debate on this thread by your own volition, which allows a degree of credibility to the assumption that you have some interest in the progress of the thread. If you could care less, then don’t even bother posting in the first place, or just ignore whatever replies or pings you get from that thread. It’s not as if that ranks among the Twelve Feats of Hurcules.
AND, FWIW, pinging a half dozen previously voluntarily involved parties hardly constitutes a “shotgun” post; there were far more people posting to this thread than were pinged to my reply.
Still, my apologies for disturbing your little gilded patch of time-space continuum.
Your “ping” should’ve been addressed to posters to whom it would’ve had relevance or is that too much trouble?
I said nothing about the moths, their spread and/or damage causing or that I consumed “organic” produce. Therefore saying you used a “shotgun” approach was accurate.
Your sarcastic attempt to sound erudite fails, it’s Hercules, not “Hurcules”. If you’re going to gripe to me at least learn to use “spell” checking and fewer pointless metaphors.
Otherwise, Have a nice day!
Since it turns out you hadn't any further interest, you might at least have gone next door for the teaspoon of social grace required to simply ignore my ping to you instead of coming back with this nitpicking, snot-nosed Emperor shtick of yours.
I give you complete liberty NOT to respond further as neither I nor anyone else have any use for your royal odiousness.
Good day.
I’ve already explained why I thought you MIGHT have had an interest in what I posted: you DID discuss the properties of the product being sprayed, and I included additional information on that exact aspect of the discussion in the post to which you were pinged.

“You were previously involved in the debate on this thread by your own volition, which allows a degree of credibility to the assumption that you have some interest in the progress of the thread.”
I agree with that sentiment.
I'm already involved in exterminating every critter I find to be even mildly troublesome.
I guess you heard the good news that the spraying is (at least temporarily) stopped in Santa Cruz. I can’t bear to read this whole thread—there are so many on FR that are happy to give the State complete control over their lives.
