Ex-press aide McClellan says in new book that White House used propaganda to sell war
Washington Post ^ | May 28, 2008 | By Michael D. Shear

Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan writes in a new memoir that the Iraq war was sold to the American people with a sophisticated "political propaganda campaign" led by President Bush and aimed at "manipulating sources of public opinion" and "downplaying the major reason for going to war."

McClellan includes the charges in a 341-page book, "What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception," that delivers a harsh look at the White House and the man he served for close to a decade. He describes Bush as demonstrating a "lack of inquisitiveness," says the White House operated in "permanent campaign" mode, and admits to having been deceived by some in the president's inner circle about the leak of a CIA operative's name.

“CLINTON: Good evening.

Earlier today, I ordered America’s armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq’s nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors.

The hard fact is that so long as Saddam remains in power, he threatens the well-being of his people, the peace of his region, the security of the world.

The best way to end that threat once and for all is with a new Iraqi government — a government ready to live in peace with its neighbors, a government that respects the rights of its people.”

And to think we’ve been told all along that the White House was inept at persuading the public.

Scott McClellan was with W in Texas - his brother Mike(?)was also given top job @ HHS/Medicare & Medicaid.

Must be short of money and very low on integrity. The Bush family has such a long history of loyalty to their employees......sad that it’s not mutual.

He always appeared inept and dumbstruck - waffled and weaved.

Good riddance when he was fired - and just like pond scum - he floated up again.

"downplaying the major reason for going to war."

Duhr.

Because, "We're putting an invading US Military smack in the center of the Middle East to coerce, threaten, and demand action of all Middle Eastern countries" would've gone over like a lead balloon. War time geopolitics isn't about laying all your cards on the table.

Does the book cover the part where the President of the United States hires the inarticulate half wit stuttering son of big mouthed Texas crony to be his press secretary?

I’ve always wondered about that.

I think little Scotty is just pissed off that the GOP rejected his mommy in her attempt to run for governor, so she had to run third party (or fourth party) where she fared a little lower than Kinky in the race. So his way of getting back at the GOP is to attack the Bush administration.
