Child advocate Laura Chapman is not afraid to take risks. Nine years ago Laura rescued two teenage girls from an FLDS branch outside Salt Lake City, and she risked kidnapping charges and even death threats to do it.
"I could relate to them. I could see myself in them," says Laura, who was once herself a member of the FLDS community in Hilldale, Utah.
"My father had four wives, I have 31 brothers and sisters," Laura tells correspondent Erin Moriarty.
She was 18 when she was forced to marry a man she barely knew. "We had never kissed. We never had any kind of intimacy at all," she says. "So I knew what that's like for a young woman. It's a severely emotionally abusive experience."
Laura tried to be the dutiful wife, and before long she had five children. But inside she struggled as she watched young girls being married off to older men. "There were just things that happened over the years that my soul told me where wrong," she says.
The last straw for Laura was when her own husband announced that in order to get to heaven he would need another wife. In fact, he had already chosen her: a 16-year-old girl.
"He told me that he married her," Laura recalls. "Tears ran down my face and he said, 'You look like you need a hug. Can I hug you?' And I said, 'Don't you ever touch me again and get the hell out of my house.'"

A Polygamy is a happy thing. and Keep Sweet. ping!!
BTTT
Keep Sweet....I’ve wondered if that is some kind of code.
Keep Sweet=”Put some ice on it.”
It probably is, between them — however, I have a friend in the deep South who tells me to ‘’stay sweet’’ — it’s a totally innocuous term of endearment. Like the ‘’gays’’ co-opting the word ‘’gay’’ and the rainbow, it’s probably just another previously-innocent phrase that became used for a nefarious purpose.
Thanks for posting the article.
“He’s run a whole community like Nazi Germany. He’s tossed boys out.
He’s taken women and children away from their father and given them to somebody else,” she says. “It’s a crime. It’s a crime against innocence.”
Keep sweet =Don’t talk to strangers? Shhh?
Yeah..I’m always telling my grandkids “give me some sugar” as they leave. I never thought anything about it until the other day when my granddaughter mentioned that I really wasn’t talking about sugar but a kiss.
According to FLDS101:
Jeffs taught the FLDS that all outsiders or gentiles are wicked and would eventually be destroyed. All the gentiles will be killed, but among us, the priesthood people, not all of us will survive. It will only be those who keep sweet. We don't want to go down with the wicked. We want to remain with our prophet. (WSJ 11/15/95)
The FLDS are taught that gentiles are idol worshippers because of their objects (TV, jewelry, carvings, pictures, etc.) that they desire. Whatever you love is what you obey. If you love anything more than Heavenly Father, more than keeping sweet, you are an idol worshiper. . . . you're not supposed to have little trinkets on your dresser, or the image of anything in your home that is useless - things hanging on your wall that are just useless - images of people or animals or whatever, those are idols. . . . If you went into the gentile homes, there you would find idols all over their houses. (WSJ 11/22/95)

So, whereas to the fLDS Mormons the Gentiles are outright wicked idolaters...
...to the LDS Mormons the Gentiles (remember now that for Mormons even "Jews" are "Gentiles") are outright apostates of the Christian faith. [See LDS Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith - History, verses 18-20].
I say that to my kids every day. It's an innocent endearment. "Put a cherry on top" means to rub noses. :-)
I’ll have to remember that.:’)
I saw in one of the hundreds of articles I’ve read on the Texas case (sorry I can’t remember which one), that “keep sweet” to FLDS people means keep the Holy Ghost moving through you.
This cult doesn’t have the Holy Ghost.
Rather, “keep sweet” is an uber-control message that means, to paraphrase: “Obey the false prophet Warren Jeffs in all things, and don’t complain about it or you will go to the deepest fires of hell.”
It means “keep obedient”. Don’t talk back. Obey.
Interesting view on pictures of people and things. I guess pictures of Warren in their rooms are not idols?
susie
If you are keeping sweet no matter what, you are a person ready to give up your own will and just obey the priesthood over you.
Exactly!!! I’ve heard ‘’sugar’’ substituted for a big smooch, too, as in ‘’Give Sarah a big sugar for me when you see her.’’
