John McCain has called off a fundraiser at the home of a Texas oilman who joked about rape during a 1990 gubernatorial run in the state.
The Texan, Republican Clayton Williams, made the joke during his failed campaign against Democrat Ann Richards. Williams compared rape to the weather, saying, "As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it."
He also compared Richards to the cattle on his ranch, saying he would "head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt."
Williams' comments made national news at the time and remain easy to find on the Internet. Even so, McCain's campaign said it hadn't known about the remarks.
"These were obviously incredibly offensive remarks that the campaign was unaware of at the time it was scheduled," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said. "It's positive that he did apologize at the time, but the comments are nonetheless offensive."

Is uh, Howard Dean also in charge of McCain's campaign, too?
NO, NO, John McPain can forgive — Democrats! It’s his so-called “fellow” Republicans that he loathes.
Bobby Knight did that joke before this in a 1988 interview with Connie Chung...and he was forgiven...sorta.
Poor Claytie, he may be rich, but he has no where else to go but the McPain stables this year.
Sorry, but McCain was right here. Those comments are repulsive. McCain is absolutely correct in not associating himself with a piece of sh*t like that.
By the way, the size of your text in the OP is a bit overkill.
That line was old when it got Tex Antoine canned from WABC TV back in 74.
Didn’t Saint McCain use a derogatory word for Asians in the past. Based on the standards he foists on other people the guy should not run for dog catcher.
John McCain should recuse himself from the nomination for this joke that he told:
“Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because her father is Janet Reno.”
The guy apologized for an event that happen nearly two decades ago, how long does a person need to be shunned for an idiot statement?
Now if it was last year well then there might be an issue.
Man, I gotta’ tell ya’ . . . not being a McCain supporter myself either, do you expect him to make a stand on principle here? And what principle would that be?
If the size of your font is any indicator of your carbon footprint, Al Gore owns your soul. LOL
***Is JM a coward? ***
Try five years of torture and see if YOU’RE a coward.
I disagree that this counts as hypocrisy.
McCain had unspeakable stuff done to him over the course of many years. Worse than rape. A lot of people, myself included, think that he gets a pass on whatever he wants to call them.
Yea, he called the communists Viet Cong - gooks.
oH, Bull CRAP. You ever said something offensive? EVER in your life??? Did you apologize? Then John McCain doesn’t want your damn money.
McCain is sucking up to the pressure of the left. If he were halfway intelligent, he’d realize you NEVER EVER win by doing that. They sense they’ve won, and they continue to attack.
Soon, John McCain will only be able to get money from cloisterd nuns and monks...and maybe not even then, because the left will attack him for only accepting money from people who are “anti-choice”!
McCain is such a jerk. This is yet ANOTHER of his major faults. He has fired loyal campaign workers because they were formerly “lobbyists.”
He also disowned Pastor John Hagee AFTER Hagee had apologized to Donohue for some anti-Catholic comments that were spoken in ignorance, because he had been misled by some of those Catholic-bashing books like “Hitler’s Pope.” (It’s OK if your typical NY Times liberal continues to believe those lies about Pius X, but it’s not OK if a pastor was temporarily taken in by them until someone took the trouble to educate him on the matter.)
It was a genuine apology, Donohue accepted it, and in his most recent Catholic League newsletter describes a very pleasant and productive meeting with Pastor Hagee and his wife in his New York office. But that wasn’t good enough for McCain. McCain can reach across the aisle, and never quarrels with his Democrat partners, but he never hesitates to throw his friends and party associates under the bus.
I agree...the one about rape is over the line....
