Democrats Face Budget Shortfall For Convention

Facing an $11.6 million budget shortfall, organizers of the Democratic National Convention are cutting events ...

The convention's Denver host committee reported it has deposited $29 million of the $40.6 million it promised to the Democratic National Committee by a Monday deadline. The overall convention budget is about $70 million.

A planned media walkthrough of the Pepsi Center was abruptly canceled last week, alerting political reporters across the country that something was amiss. People close to the party's convention committee said the event was scrapped in part to embarrass the host committee into stepping up its fundraising efforts.

Denver was awarded the convention in January 2007 despite lingering questions over whether the city would be able to pull together the necessary financing. At the time, DNC Chairman Howard Dean set those concerns aside, noting that Colorado and other states in the mountain West were becoming fertile electoral territory for Democrats.

The Clintons' close friend and top fundraiser, Terry McAuliffe, raised millions for the party's conventions in 2000 and 2004. He's helping to retire Hillary Clinton's campaign debt, which is estimated to be at least $30 million.

Two wealthy Bill Clinton associates, supermarket mogul Ron Burkle and Hollywood producer Steve Bing, have made six-figure contributions to past conventions but so far have held off doing so this year.

Maybe Democrats can raise taxes to pay for their convention to nominate and elect a president who will raise taxes.

I think states 51 to 57 are not contributing their share... Maybe Obama needs to visit them again?

I’m worried about the huge carbon footprint this convention will leave. I think they should cancel it to address the concerns of the Global Warming Hoax.

The Obama campaign is sucking up all the money in the donor pool. That will leave less for Dem candidates further down the ticket too.

If they can’t run a convention, how will they run the world’s most powerful country?

Is that the shortfall before or after they pay reparations for the Democrat Party role in enforcing and perpetuating slavery, and enforcing and perpetuating Jim Crow all the way up to and including the 1960s?

See, it’s not that they’ve failed to raise enough money, it’s just that the costs of putting on a convention are simply too high. Applying their energy policy to the convention, Democrats should demand massive and punitive taxes on the suppliers of goods and services for their convention in order to drive the costs down so that they can afford them.

If a million screaming lesbians descended on your city, wouldn't you try to protect your city and convention center from them no matter what the cost?

Nope, they don’t have the authority to raise taxes to pay for their convention. Thankfully.
