Strategic Petroleum Reserve

Strategic Petroleum Reserve

I have wondered if any single Representative in Congress could possibly be as dumb as all of them. Every once in a while I get my answer and the answer is yes.

I have listened to the Democrats inform us that increasing the supply of oil by drilling will not alleviate the problem of high energy cost. I hear them expound relentlessly why building more refineries will not be helpful. Nuclear energy is out of the question they preach. Wind power might be acceptable as long as Senator Kennedy can’t see them. Some insist energy prices are not driven by supply and demand but rather by speculators, energy company CEOs, and disingenuous Republicans.

Now I am hearing various Representatives calling for President Bush to tap the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve as a way to reduce crude prices. By various, I am sure most of you already know which party of the various political parties I speak of.

Here is what I found under several headlines on the topic resulting from an Internet search.

Congressman John F. Tierney, D-Salem, along with House Democratic Leadership, called on President Bush to immediately release a small portion of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to help increase supply and lower energy prices.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent President Bush a letter urging him to use his authority to draw down a limited portion of the oil held in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to expand available supplies in the market and help reduce the record prices adversely affecting American consumers and businesses.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., Friday called on the Bush administration to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an effort to ease energy prices.

Rep. Steve Israel, D-Huntington will call on President George W. Bush to tap into the strategic petroleum reserve.

Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen says Americans "are fed up every time they go to fill up." He says taxpayers have demanded action from Washington, but that President Bush and the GOP respond with the "same old line" about the need for more oil drilling. He's also urging the nation to tap into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. As he puts it, "America's rainy day is now."

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is located in the United States and operated by the Department of Energy. The SPR is the "first line of defense" against a reduction of oil supplies to the United States. The 1973-73 oil embargo was a shock to the U.S. economy and the government decided that the country needed a reliable reserve. President Ford signed The Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 into law establishing the reserve. The act gives the president the sole authority to decide when to release oil from the reserve. Congress has discussed automatic triggers for release but has never changed the law.

As I reviewed the Internet for news of these request to the President I am reminding of an expression from my youth. “Is the money burning a hole in your pocket”? The next thing that came to mind was the funds from the Highway Trust Fund quickly followed by the Social Security Funds. You may be wondering how I connected these events.

The liberals’ inability to exhibit patience and confidence during a time of concern connect these events. The reason for establishing the Social Security Trust Fund and its purpose was correct. The reason for establishing the Highway Trust Fund and its purpose was correct. The reason for establishing the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and its purpose is also correct. The reason to use the Highway Trust Fund, the Social Security Trust Fund, and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for other than their intended purpose is not correct. Some of our noted Representatives just can’t display the courage to stand by their convictions that warranted creating the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and the funds.

Drilling mitigates the rising prices and that is the step that must be accomplished first.

Liberals are born without brains, that makes carrying on an intelligent conversation with them extremely difficult.

Nancy Pelosi:
“This call for drilling in areas that are protected is a hoax, it’s an absolute hoax on the part of the Republicans and this administration” Pelosi said at her weekly press conference. “It’s a decoy to punt your attention away from the fact that their policies have produced $4-a-gallon gasoline.”

It’s not that they were born without brains, its more like what little brains they possess have not matured beyond that of an eight-year-old’s.
PJ Oraork said it best when he called liberalism the philosophy of snivelling brats.

Democrats think we are all as stupid as their constituents. President Bush stopped filling the SPR and the price of oil is still going up.

I would like the oil companies to call Congress’ bluff and tell them to take back the oil leases which are going to be up soon anyway. Who will Congress give the oil leases to? The Saudis?

Boy are they stupid.

The Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Is estimated to hold 85 billion barrels of undiscovered recoverable oil (BBO) but it is not enough to make a difference, we can’t drill our way out of this, so we shouldn’t drill here.

http://www.mms.gov/revaldiv/PDFs/2006NationalAssessmentBrochure.pdf

The Arctic National Wildlief Refuge (ANWR) Is estimated to hold 7 BBO economically recoverable at a market price of $30/bbl (1998 economic analysis) but it is certainly not enough to make a difference, we can’t drill our way out of this, so we shouldn’t drill there.

http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-0028-01/fs-0028-01.htm

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) contains 0.706 (ZERO point seven) BBO (July 11, 2008 inventory), but President Bush is blocking the release of a portion of this inventory which would make a needed difference in prices.

http://www.spr.doe.gov/dir/dir.html

So say Tierney, Pelosi, Reid, Israel, and Van Hollen.

Oh, please!

I have posted here numerous times why SPR can’t be used like a checking account.

Seven withdrawals maximum during the remaining life of this planet.

It is not designed as an election year campaign issue.

Congresspersons are individually bright, not necessarily of FR quality. Unfortunately they need the support of their Party and as a group they are imbeciles.

Quitter Loser Congress says each step toward energy independence is "Just a drop in the bucket....Ten years away.....zzzzzzzz".....

Quitter Losers can say that every ten years.

Traditional Americans say "Well, if you string several Drops In The Bucket together every ten years, you start to put a dent in the problem. So let's do it."

Most. Worthless. Quitter. LOSER. Excuse. For. A. Congress. In. My. Half-Century. Lifetime.

I think Bush will sell oil from the SPR to American refineries. After he gets drilling and more refineries.
