Broccoli could reverse the heart damaging effects of diabetes
physorg.com ^ | Aug 6, 2008 | NA

Professor Paul Thornalley and his team from the University of Warwick have found a broccoli compound called Sulforaphane. This compound can encourage the body to produce more enzymes to protect the vessels, as well as reduce high levels of molecules which cause significant cell damage.

Past studies have shown that a diet rich in vegetables – particularly brassica vegetables such as broccoli – is linked to decreased risk of heart disease and stroke. People with diabetes have a particularly high risk of heart disease and stroke and other health impairments, such as kidney disease, are linked to damaged blood vessels.

Professor Thornalley, at the University’s Warwick Medical School, tested the effects of Sulforaphane on blood vessel cells damaged by high glucose levels (hyperglycaemia).

His team observed a significant reduction of molecules in the body called Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Hyperglycaemia can cause levels of ROS to increase three-fold and such high levels can damage human cells. The results of the study showed that Sulforaphane reversed this increase in ROS by 73 per cent.

They also found Sulforaphane activated a protein in the body called nrf2, which protects cells and tissues from oxidative stress by activating protective antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes. The study showed the presence of Sulforaphane in human microvascular cells doubled the activation of nrf2.

Professor Thornalley said: “Our study suggests that compounds such as Sulforaphane from broccoli may help counter processes linked to the development of vascular disease in diabetes. In future, it will be important to test if eating a diet rich in Brassica vegetables has health benefits for diabetic patients. We expect that it will.”

Yep, if we all eat veggies we will never die, we will all live forever if we just eschew meat. Eat your broccoli, live forever. However, I am glad that diabetics have something they can eat that will help them, if this article is true and if the science behind the study is accurate. One can’t tell any more if something has a basis of fact or if it is based on “global warming science”, in other words false science.

Broccoli could make your breasts grow and make you more like a woman. But you’ll live longer that way.

Speaking of sugar metabolism, check out what about 1500mg of cinnamon per day MAY contribute. (along with the wholistic exercise, diet thing... but not off the deep end)

You are right about that and it stays regulated. On Atkins you eat meat and cheeses as well as veggies like broccoli and it all contributes to the effects of the diet including weight loss. I don't think that the article says be a vegetarian and you will live longer; it says include these types of vegetables in your diet and it can help you.

What got your panties in a bunch? If you don't like broccoli don't eat it. Others, like me, understand and respect the need for veggies in our diets.

BS. I understand and respect everyone's beliefs as long as they don't interfere with mine. Pushing veggies on the whole country, and this article falls into that category, is interfering with my beliefs and eating habits or at least is an attempt to do so. I eat veggies every day, in fact I don't know anyone who doesn't eat them.

But pushing any type of so called "miracle cure" as a way to live forever is just nonsensical. Such as pretending if you don't smoke you will live forever, if you don't eat meat you will live forever and on and on. They don't say the forever but it is implied.

I would question this whole article and findings of it without much more testing. BTW, a**hat, I don't wear panties but yours seem to be in a twist about me knocking the broccoli theory as a way to being non diabetic.

Click on the keyword sulforaphane. It's been studied for a while. Enter sulforaphane and diabetes into PubMed's query box.

Only 3 hits so far. BTW, who is implying immortality?

* Califlower
* Collards

(Remember this, it is a Trivial Pursuit question)

Thanks, neverdem.

I especially like the effects on the endothelial cells -- as a layman, I take it that that translates in this case to "linings of the blood vessels" (meaning it prevents hardening of the arteries in "Syndrome X")??

Cheers!
