NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. Coast Guard cutter will embark on an Arctic voyage this week to determine the extent of the continental shelf north of Alaska and map the ocean floor, data that could be used for oil and natural gas exploration.
U.S. and University of New Hampshire scientists on the Coast Guard Cutter Healy will leave Barrow, Alaska, on Thursday on a three-week journey. They will create a three-dimensional map of the Arctic Ocean floor in a relatively unexplored area known as the Chukchi borderland.

My dad is a member of the Knights of the Bluenose. He got it in the 50’s flying as boom man on KC-97’s up over the North Pole.
This ought to be interesting since the Russians are busy claiming everything up there for themselves.

Russia can’t — the Northwest Passage belongs to Canada, right up to the North Pole. If they start buggering around trying to claim territory that’s not theirs, Canada will send in the Mounties to arrest ‘em. Same goes with you Americans.

I say it in jest but only partly so. Spain and France have both found out what happens when Canadian territorial waters are flouted by their vessels, in fairly recent times. And in the case of Spain, their vessel was seized while it was making its get-away in International waters.
The Northwest Passage is an issue Canada takes very seriously.
