I would add - the situation isn’t going to change. I’ve met a lot of young Republicans over the past couple of years in their 20s through a college group one of my daughters belonged to, and the majority I talked to made it clear they had no intention of serving (even as officers, being that they had their degrees or would be completing them within a few years). A few said they were considering it, because it would look good on their resume or if they ran for office later on. Slightly disconcerting, and I’ve heard similar stories from friends elsewhere, but it makes me appreciate those who do serve all the more.

There used to be a classification, I-Y, for people with less serious medical conditions, who would be called up in a declared war but weren’t being drafted during the Vietnam War. About 1972 it was abolished and those with that status were reclassified.

I'd also venture to say it has to be the shortest amount of experience for any ticket in history in the private sector:

In 1969, Biden began practicing law in Wilmington, Delaware, and was soon elected to the New Castle County, County Council, where he served from 1970 to 1972.

Biden was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972, so it makes a grand total of three years experience in the private sector practicing law, and only one of those three years not holding an elective office.

Of course, compared to Obama, even this shallow experience looks absolutely stellar!

Not only is it not a boot camp for any President, it is also not a boot camp for a completely incompetent Vice President. And just as that fits Obama regarding the presidency it also fits Biden as well.

Yes. And we’ve had discussions on the forum before regarding those man enought to serve and those not. Mitt, Huck, Fred, Rudy all had the opportunity to serve and didn’t. Given the timeframe, it’s interesting that they couldn’t make time to serve either on active duty or as a reservist. Some guys, Reagan for example, cheated on an eye exam so he could serve in the military. G. Gordon Liddy lied about his asthma in order to serve. There are those who do, and those who don’t. If you don’t, you shouldn’t complain when you’re forty and somebody points out your decision.

And anyone thought the Dems respect our military for what reason again?

Commies don't like organized Religion or any other organizations not run by the government, commies don't like Business organizations, commies don't like free thinking individuals, commies don't like the constitution giving equal rights to all human life, commies don't like "classes" other than the arrogant elite class vs the sheep, commies don't like our guns because they keep us from being ruled.

In short....Commies don't like Free people and our military keeps us free.

Shouldn't Republicans make a big deal of this?

No.

The rats will point out that the last time it happened, their St. Franklin, the communist, Roosevelt was the president along with Henry, the communist, Wallace.

They'll say WWII turned out OK.

We don't want to listen to that demagoguery.

Why wouldn’t FDR’s term as ASN count as Military experience?

It's a civilian post.

Why? Had Giuliani or Romney or Huckabee or Thompson won the nomination then would they have been required to choose a vet to add legitimacy? Palin, Jindal, Steele, all the other names being bandied about are all people without military service. Should we shirk from nominating them in the future for that reason? People who live in glass houses should be wary of throwing stones.

I tend to agree with you, though I consider service an asset.

What I wondered about was his draft status, that's legitimate, as I'm sure was asthma in many cases. And particularly the statement which was attributed to a WP interview in the 80s that he failed his physical due to asthma. Which implies he was drafted or enlisted. A matter of keeping the record straight.

Has anyone checked for something nearly equally important, like any private sector business experience???

Every created an actual job or met a payroll, or even made a profit by improving some element of society without government grants???

Tread lightly on this. Biden is one of the very few Senators who has had a kid in Iraq (McCain is another). That has a big impact. I probably learned more about the military from my son going to Iraq 4 times than I did from my own draftee (2-year) service in the end-of-Vietnam broken Army.

I'd agree, as I noted earlier the question that popped into my mind was just what was his status. I think that's worth noting, but even if he stretched the truth, it's a little stretch.

Military service isn't an issue that will be focused on this year, as it was in 2004 or 2000, for obvious reasons

Probably should have noted that this isn’t an issue that resonates with many voters anymore, we’re getting old. Did he have asthma, as discovered in his induction physical, or did he have “asthma” as represented to his draft board by his docs. No real difference anymore.
