Actor Duvall Blasts Palin Critics at Fundraiser

October 14, 2008 8:24 AM

ABC News' Imtiyaz Delawala Reports: Introducing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin at a GOP fundraiser Monday, actor Robert Duvall blasted conservatives who have criticized the McCain-Palin ticket in recent days, calling conservative columnist George Will a "super-nerd" and former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson a "block of wood".

At an RNC fundraiser in McLean, VA, Duvall introduced Palin for the third time since her nomination to the Republican ticket, taking the opportunity to accuse Republicans critical of the McCain campaign as giving "credence to the other side."

"It bothers me that certain people in the Republican Party are attacking the McCain-Palin ticket, like super-nerd George...What's his name?” Duvall asked, prompting a few attendees to laugh and shout out George Will. “George...George, I can't even think. George Will," Duvall said, referring to the Washington Post columnist who has been critical of Palin.

The legendary actor then attacked former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson, who campaigned with McCain last Friday in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Thompson had expressed unhappiness with the McCain campaign in an article that appeared in Sunday's New York Times. Asked if he was happy with Sen. McCain's campaign, Thompson told the paper, "No," adding, "I don't know who is."

We must remember George Wills and his ilk live in super upper middle class neighborhoods. They speak, only, to one another. If Sarah Palin has no experience outside of Alaska, being a mayor of governor, PTA pres., and obama has experience being a community organizer in chicago, then obama has the experience. It doesn’t matter that obama is nothing but a committee man. He was put together by a committee, schooled by a committee, reads to the public what a committee writes and is directed how to act and dress by a commmittee. Now he’s talking about “the community? makes the decisions. So next we will be hearing from the George Wills of the media world that the community will be making the decisions. These “news” people stick too close together with their thoughts and writings.

he is indeed a block of wood.

I watched him, and several others speak at the RNC and thought "These guys were on the short list for VP?"

No doubt in my mind whatsoever that McCain made a good pick.

“pretty decent actor”???

You’re standards must be VERY high!

What prep school? He doesn’t look like the prep-school type (I did a PG year at Lawrenceville way back when...).

I though that we don’t care what actors have to say.

I haven’t seen the last 2 you mention - I’ll have to look for them. I thought the miniseries for Stephen King’s The Stand was decent - probably as good as could have been done with a book with such scope.

Nice to see mention of The Apostle. I haven’t seen it in a long time. It really struck me as a truly great movie...and also a profoundly American movie. And yet its subject matter so runs against the grain of pop-cultural/political thinking, it just might be one of America’s most underrated movies. Its realism seemed to me more visceral and honest than most other movies. “Realism” today seems to be simply skewing colors towards green or blue, blowing out the contrast and grain, and making sure the camera shakes...an empty, sophomoric trend, IMO.

FYI Gary Owen is the 7th Cav of Custer and ‘We Were Soldiers’ fame. Duval played the CO of the 9th Cav in ‘Apocalypse Now’.

pretty decent actor

It was an exercise in understatement. Acting is a profession that I generally have no respect for. Duvall is an exception.

The school is Severn School in Severna Park, MD, which is near Annapolis. Duvall's father was a Navy Admiral and the family lived in Annapolis for a while. According to his bio in Wikipedia, Duvall's mother was related to Robert E. Lee. It's not hard to see where he got his conservative credentials.

Maybe he wasn't the prep-school type, which could help explain the expulsion.

Thanks for that background... probably explains Duvall’s outstanding portrayal in The Great Santini.

There's a great scene in the movie 'They Died With Their Boots On' starring Errol Flynn, who plays Custer, with about four different renditions of 'Garry Owen' played in sequence.

A must see for 'Garry Owen' fans like myself.

Duvall is the best!!! Thank goodness there are some actors I can still watch. James Woods is brilliant and he’s a conservative too.

Now, I have a lot of Democrat friends, who have picked the name next to the (D) in every election all their adult lives, who are complaining that John McCain is not the John McCain of 2000.

So, tell me, who are folks gonna vote for?

Last night I sat down with a 77 year old Democrat that has never voted for a (R) in his life.

I asked him who he was voting for. He said, "I can't believe what I'm about to say but, I'm voting for McCain."

In November, they are going to pick the (D) just as they have for the past 30 years, and just like their parents did the 40 years before that.

You are wrong.

I asked the old man why he would not vote for Obama. He said that Obama is a communist and tied in with the terrorists.

The word is getting out.

Thank you Jeff Head and MANY others!!!
