Conservatives say that Bush destroyed the Republican Party(actually, one independent and David Frum)
L.A. Times ^ | 10.29.08 | Johanna Neuman

They are starting to eat their own.

Polls show that Democrat Barack Obama is leading in battleground states, including some -- such as Ohio -- carried by George W. Bush not once but twice.

But even before the election is over -- and despite the fact that some polls show a tightening race -- Republicans are piling on their own presidential candidate, John McCain, accusing him of deserting principle.

Some moderate Republicans think McCain has sold his soul to the right, abandoning the bipartisan record he built on immigration and other issues. "He has lost his brand as a maverick," said Rep. Chris Shays, the last Republican congressman in New England, in a tight race in Connecticut again this year.

But conservatives are also angry at McCain and Bush, for mucking up governance so much that a Barack Obama is even possible. Dave Gibson, a 41-year-old independent from Norfolk, Va., summed it up in one word: debt.

In a post on American Chronicle, he wrote:

Under Bush's leadership, the national debt went from $5 trillion in 2001 to $10.5 trillion today. The doubling of our debt has had a devastating effect on our economy and our currency is quickly becoming worthless. Always happy to spend more money, rather than raising taxes Bush simply goes to China or Japan and borrows more. That kind of irresponsible behavior has brought this nation to the brink of a depression and destroys any notion of fiscal conservatism, once a trademark of the Republican Party.

I agree that President Bush destroyed the Republican Party...I cannot see how McCain, who isn't in charge yet, can be blamed.

We're going to catch some flak for it, but I agree with you, although he didn't destroy the party - he just weakened it greatly. His failure to understand that the "New Tone" was EXACTLY the wrong approach to take with Democrats in Washington even after eight years of their sabotage of everything he tried to do was his primary mistake, IMHO.

This is correct. Aside from judges, defense and tax cuts, I can't think of anything that Bush did that was actually "conservative."

This is one of the reasons I see Hussein as more of an extension of Bush than McCain. Hussein promises far more runaway spending and government growth than even Bush and the old GOP were able to put into place.

I blame Bush the most - the buck stops with him. Leadership would have gone a long way toward weeding out the RINOs in the party. I love Dick Cheney, but at least in the second term, arrangements should have been made for him to step down & another made VP - to groom for the next presidency. Bush has left the GOP in shambles.

And maybe that will turn out to be a GOOD thing in the long run. The party needs a complete housecleaning - and shrink the tent! If they can’t do that - then another party will most assuredly rise out of the ashes of the Republican party - because if they can’t get rid of the RINOs, they will die.

Typical hit piece days before the election meant to divide and sow the seeds of discord to depress GOP turnout. It is the LAT after all that refuses to release damaging information about Obama.

The purge should be on hold until after the election. But there must be a purge and a return to first principles.

Here’s the real dirty little secret: If Obama loses this election, the Democrat Party is destroyed. If black people get bamboozled into thinking this election was in the bag, then it is learned that white Democrats turned on him, the black vote is history. Not to mention the internal struggle between Clinton and Obama that would take place.

Regardless, he's but 1 of 100 senators. Meanwhile, the idiot in the White House is the current head of the party, the chief, numero uno, head honcho, etc. HE DESERVES THE BLAME!

So who destroyed the LA Times?

They just laid off 75. NY Times was just rated “junk” status.

Could it be, readers tire eventually of constant liberal bias?

I do note, Fox News Channel seems to be gaining market...
