Norm Coleman Claims Victory. Recount to begin

Sen. Norm Coleman late this morning declared victory for a second term from Minnesota, even as the wheels are churning toward an automatic recount of the nearly 3 million votes cast in his battle with Democrat Al Franken.

The Republican, whose margin in the unofficial state tally stands at 725 votes, said from his headquarters in St. Paul that he is "humbled and grateful for the victory that the voters gave us last night."

He then said Franken should abandon any pursuit of a recount, saying that "the prospect of overturning 725 votes is extremely, extremely, extremely remote." Franken could request that there not be a recount, but there is no hint that he would make such a move.

As for the recount itself, Secretary of State Mark Ritchie said he expects "several weeks" to pass before it is complete.

I'm not a big Coleman fan, but I detest Frankenstein

In Minnesota, recounts rarely change results. This was way too close for comfort, but a win is a win.

Depends on who is doing the counting.

MN has paper ballots, so the likelihood of machine errors, chads, and such... is very low... This result will likely stand, but the GOP better have a plane full of lawyers on the way to MN just in case...

Isn’t a recount mandatory if the % spread is less than 0.5%?

Several weeks? Waiting to find those wayward absentee ballots or hidden votes in a drawer?

if it would have been me...in this case...i would have conceded and told the people in Minn they can have him and obama and see what they get and run again in four while asking for the ones who did vote for me to understand that we have MAJOR WORK to do nationally over the next 4.

i’d been so po’ed that so many wanted the fool that i’d give him them.

Mr Coleman, have you ever been to Washington State? 450 votes were all we needed in 2004.

The fact that 1.2 million MN voters cast a vote for Al Franken really sickens me.

IIRC, the same option was available to George ALlen in 2006 and he did what Coleman is asking Franken to do .. ask that a recount not be conducted. Why do I think Franken lacks either Allen’s class, or interest in a resolution for the people of his state

Me too. I work with a lot of them. Once you get out of downtown Minneapolis, though, things get a lot saner.

We need a Conservative ACORN.

Before 2010 we need to have a well organized conservative group in every town to aid with GOTV, registrations, signs, literature. Etc. We need to make the hands-on stuff an integral part of being a conservative. We can't just sit around and let things happen. We need to make it happen....

If you're male and born in the midwest between 1970 and today, you have a one-in-four chance of being named "Chad".

You’re sick? In Washington State, not only did a dem Governor who was never elected in the first place and during her first term turned a multi billion dollar surplus into a 3 billion budget deficit been given another 4 years, but Darcy Burner, who when campaigning for a U.S. House seat said she had an economics degree from Harvard and then Harvard very publically replied that she did not, got 50% of the vote. Now given that Dave Reichert only has about a 1000 vote lead, this means we have another recount on our hands, and we all know what happens when recounts happen in WA state. It means a box of votes for the dem candidate appears magically out of nowhere to overturn the result.

I see it as a leftist victory either way with Coleman still a “RINO” Republican instead of always being a conservative Republican! Get rid of all leftists at every political level, including all RINO’s at every political level! Conservatism will always be a political minority as long as leftists have all of the political power with no end in sight! Leftists will have the power to possibly end all future U.S. elections as well as possibly make Barack Obama a President for life! Conservatives always play by the rules, while leftists always get their power any way that they can get it, even if it’s unlawful and unconstitutional! How can conservatives successfully get around all of the ongoing abuses of power by the dominant leftists, even if this includes the cancellation of all future U.S. elections and having Barack Obama really become President for life?
