KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — A Gresham man has been sentenced to 6 years in prison for attempted rape after a mother discovered his inappropriate text messages on her 12-year-old daughter's cell phone.

Prosecutors said 29-year-old Patrick Lee Kenney also pleaded no contest to attempted sexual abuse and furnishing obscene material to a minor.

Kenney met the girl on the MySpace site.

I wonder if “Honest, I thought she was a police officer!” will ever become a viable defense in this sort of thing.

The world is full of morons

That would be over half of the people who voted in the presidential election by definition.

It will, just as soon as a Dhim politician gets charged with the crime.

Nobody has less tolerance for these guys than I do. I have two daughters.

But.

These convictions for “attempted rape” when the perp apparently never was in physical proximity to the victim give me the creeps.

“Intended rape” would appear to be a more appropriate charge.

Conviction for attempted rape when the physical actions taken by the perp apparently consist only of messages in cyberspace seem excessive.

They don’t mention how old the girl claimed to be on her myspace page.

You don’t know the content of the messages. Perhaps they involved plans to deceive her parents, sneaking out to meet, etc, all of which show intent and are actions taken to facilitate a rape.

No matter how you slice it, attempting to schmooze a 12 year old into sex is attempted rape. Adults are supposed to be proactive in protecting children, not feign ignorance or whine that the child lied to them.

Anybody who tries to establish a cyber-relationship, for good or evil, is out of their minds.

I was doing some research on a 1950s dancer and set up a couple of different MtSpace/FaceBook identities in order to ask questions of the younger crowd. Since I had to put in an age, I used a 40-something figure instead of my real one.

You would be amazed (mebbe not) as the Tiffanys, Melodys and all the other cutsie names that emailed, wanting to meet me. Some I figured were police trolls but the volume indicates too many air-heads/hustlers out there. They all got the silent treatment, but the beat still goes on two years later.

You could see how kids could get sucked into these messes, which makes adult supervision (censorship if you will) mandatory.
