My View: California deserves a stimulus package (D-Karen Bass, California Assembly Speaker)
Sac Bee ^ | 11/22/08 | Karen Bass

During the Cold War, U.S. presidents paid close attention to the "domino theory" and to how having some country fall to communism on their watch would ultimately affect their place in history.

In his final weeks in office, President Bush has another set of dominoes to worry about – namely which financial giant will be the next to topple during his presidency.

To help in moving toward a national economic recovery – and to burnish his legacy by doing right in time of crisis – President Bush needs to step in now to help shore up one of the country's biggest economic dominoes: the state of California.

If the president were to look at California as a business, he'd see that it has 37 million shareholders, employs 18.5 million people, is responsible for producing more than $1.5 trillion annually and pays some $50 billion more in federal taxes than it gets back in services.

That's a record AIG, JP Morgan, Citigroup or any of the other financial institutions already receiving federal assistance couldn't hope to match.

California is not seeking the $700 billion that banks and financial services companies are poised to get. Or the $90 billion the three companies above have received.

But with California as vital as it is to the U.S. economy, the state requires the same kind of assistance given to other valuable institutions.

What California deserves is a federal stimulus package now that includes real economic assistance to states.

California has cut $15 billion from recent budgets.

--snip--

To address our budget problem in a way that does not harm the state's ability to contribute to national economic recovery, California needs to have any new state revenue at least matched by discretionary funds from the federal government.

No you don’t.

It’s time the blue states begin “paying their fair share” and “redistributing the wealth”.

That’s right, Karen. Take your silly-assed request to the well-to-do in Beverly Hills and bother them with it.

Maybe they should cancel the 3 billion they are spending on stem cell research. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6384390/ It is insane for a bankrupt state to commit 3 billion to stem cell research. This doesn't make sense whichever side of that issue you are on. http://bloggingredneck.blogspot.com/

Answers are easy, Madame Speaker: 1) Close the damn borders. 2) Cut the damn giveaways to the illegals who are already here. 3) Deport the damn illegals who are already here. 4) Vigorously prosecute the damn businesses who hire said damn illegals. 5) Loosen up the damn regulations that send businesses to Nevada. 6) Close the damn capitol for six months. 7) Shut yer damn mouth and go do something useful.

There. *dusting off hands* That oughta fix most of it...

Seeing as how Bass was the co-chair of 0bama’s campaign organization in California, I suspect she’s got more than just an Op-Ed piece going for her here.

It’s perfectly reasonable for pretty much any entity to expect a Federal Bailout, considering what has already been done.

Nice precedent set, eh?

Ahhhh... more biparisanship legislation (aka robbery, taxpayer fleecing, etc.)

Sacramento, California - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued the following statement on California's unemployment rate:
"Our economy continues to be difficult, especially for people who have lost their jobs or who have begun looking for one. As our state unemployment rate rises, my administration continues to work hard to generate jobs and help re-train people who have lost jobs in our hard-hit industries.

"I have urged the Legislature to pass an economic stimulus package that includes workplace reforms to help keep jobs in California and ways to speed up the release of billions of in-the-pipeline infrastructure and construction dollars into our economy; and our increased unemployment rate underscores the need for that package to be passed in the Legislature immediately.

"This week, through my Labor and Workforce Development Agency, I have taken action to pump out $33 million in job training funds directed toward regions of the state hit hardest by our economic downturn and to our military veterans. These grants will provide education, training, and job placement assistance for thousands of Californians.

"I also want to reiterate the need to shore up our state's Unemployment Insurance Fund. We've known for years that changes must be made to the Fund to keep it solvent, and it is unfortunate that now, when we need it most, it is racing toward the red. I have proposed a plan to ensure this important Fund continues to be a safety net for unemployed Californians and for our economy, and I urge the Legislature to pass it.

"I am pleased that, today, President Bush signed an extension of unemployment benefits that my administration had pushed so hard for, so that Californians out of work can continue to receive their benefits through the holiday season."

No spending cuts, no tax cuts and no reform of California's bloated government. Giving Karen Bass a handout would be like giving a junkie more crack. JUST SAY NO!

I was born and raised in California and have lived in Texas since 1991. I love Texas and will never move back to the west coast. Texas has no state income tax and is a “Right-To-Work” state. California is going bankrupt thanks to the government employee unions.

All 14 of the “Right-To-Work” states are in much better economic shape than the strong union states. The “Employee Free Choice Act” is aimed at big non-union companies like Walmart, Honda, Toyota, and states like Texas. After the RATs pass their Marxist agenda, the rest of the country will be in the same sorry shape as California.
