WASHINGTON Looking beyond expected House approval of an $816 billion economic stimulus plan, President Barack Obama said Wednesday the nation is at a "perilous moment" requiring swift and decisive action.
"We don't have a moment to spare," Obama said in the East Room of the White House, just hours before a crucial House roll call vote. The measure intended to steady the ricocheting economy was expected to pass, but likely with little of the bipartisan support that Obama wanted. The issue then goes to the Senate where the new president hopes to draw more GOP backing.
Obama tempered the sense of urgency in his voice with his observation that he and corporate leaders "left our meeting confident that we can still turn our economy around."
His brief remarks were designed to put his stamp on the debate while the action was taking place at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.
During his talk and in the earlier Roosevelt Room session with business CEOs, Obama said the people running the companies that are the engine of the American economy are behind him. Asked at one point if he was confident of getting Republican support, he replied only: "I'm confident we're going to get it passed."

“We don’t have a moment to spare” and yet most of the spending doesn’t occur for almost two years.
Any Republican that votes for this deserves defeat next year.
Odumbo, stop trying to get Pubbies to go along with this turkey. As you said, you won. Your folks hold a majority of seats in the House and Senate. On the other hand, you may relaise that this turd is going to fail and you want to be able to blame the GOP when this bill fails to do much if anything.
(Not even mentioning HOW the big money giveaway will be controlled)
IMO, I believe all this doom and gloom from zero is not helping the economy. I realize we are in terrible economic shape; but DC isn’t helping.
OObama! HURRY HURRY SOCIALISM CAN’T WAIT. PASS THIS QUICKLY COMRADES. COMMIE PIGS PORK PORK PORK and Pay.
How dare they mortgage our children’s income.....
I wish they would be honest and call it a Government Spending Spree instead of a “stimulus package.”
It’ll be fun trying to pay for this GSS once Social Security’s insolvency meets economic reality.
Putting the government in charge of stimulating the economy is like hiring the Hell’s Angels to keep order at a rock concert.
Blah, blah, blah. Eight days into this poseur’s reign, and we are already tired of seeing him mesmerize himself and his bimbos in the msm with that obnoxious voice.
“most of the spending doesnt occur for almost two years.”
But... but... I want my pie now!!!
I feel for the GOP on this one...the market is up upon the expectation the stimulus will pass (why?)...if the GOP stands on principle and filibusters this and the market is down 1000 points or even 500, the GOP will take in on the chin...likewise if they vote for it, they will take it on the chin...talk about a no win situation.
Give 0 nothing. Let him go down on his own. Any Republican signing onto this scam should be run out of the party on grounds of foolish ignorance.
But this ploy is so typical of congress — make an emergency measure out of the so-called instant need for stimulus money and all the time have lots of provisos embedded in the bill that they aren’t telling us about. Like, for instance, your medical records that — let’s face it — would be a tremendous invasion of our privacies.
Indy Mind provides a recap of the $825 billion spending package. Here’s the recap: http://rkdpolitics.blogspot.com/2009/01/details-of-825-billion-stimulus-package.html
My concerns are several.
The $5.1 billion for Community Development is where the ACORN money is embedded.
There’s $700 million for health care research. That, coupled with $2.1 billion for health resources and services might just be where the medical records going to the feds could be embedded. Haven’t heard back from my congressman yet.
Time to burn up the wires again and contact your congressionals and tell them what you think if you don’t want the “stimulus” bill to go through congress with more blank rubber checks for runaway pork spending.
Obama wants the $825 billion sent over to the White House right away. Never mind that there’s not enough time to really study the bill in detail. It’s got to be done right now.
And I just heard on Fox News that there’s a plan for a vote to come up in the House later today. Unbelievable! I reserve the right to say that this pork package is not going to stimulate the economy. It’s just going to make a whole bunch of political cronies richer.

Maceman!!! Where ya’ been? Have you seen the MASSGOP choice for Chairman? Stick a fork in us!
IMO, I believe all this doom and gloom from zero is not helping the economy.
:::::::::::
Of course it is not. It is deliberate. This “accelerated crisis” on the part of the socialists, is fuel for their faux spending ripoff.
This is nothing but the politics of fear: “Pass this now or were all doomed, DOOMED I TELL YOU.”
The $5.1 billion for Community Development is where the ACORN money is embedded.

Quid pro quo PAYBACK.
No way Zero!.....You damn democrats can have all the credit. You want it that way anyway, don’t you? After all you don’t want to share the glory with repubs do you?.....Or is it, you know this pile of crap is only pork and it won’t create any stimulus to the economy....You clowns are easy to figure out!
JUST SAY NO
That's right. Get the vote done before anyone figures out where all their money is going!
