In the 1930s and 1940s, the country was in a tough spot and people were making major sacrifices. Economic and personal, including marching their sons off to war. So when they went to a movie, they wanted entertainment, with a happy ending. Musicals were big. Movies celebrating American values and heroism were big.
I theorize that times of economic bliss foster a "anything goes" attitude that erodes cultural mores. But time of economic woe have the reverse effect, a return to traditional values. The experiment has been running for a couple of decades since Reagan gave us the good times, and sure enough we've seen the culture descend into madness. Now we get to see the other half of the experiment. I predict this film, if made, will bomb in the extreme.
