This is Not the Freedom Tower: Money Trumps Patriotism in the Name Change to 1 WTC
New York Post ^ | March 27, 2009 | Tom Topousis

Freedom is out of fashion at Ground Zero.

Once hailed as a beacon of rebirth in the aftermath of Sept. 11, the Freedom Tower has been stripped of its patriotic name -- which has been swapped out for the more marketable "One World Trade Center," Port Authority officials conceded yesterday.

More than seven years after the terror attacks and amid an effort to market the tower to international tenants, sentiment gave way to practicality.

"As we market the building we will ensure that the building is presented in the best possible way," said PA Chairman Anthony Coscia.

"One World Trade Center is its address. It's the address that we're using. It's the one that's easiest for people to identify with, and, frankly, we've gotten a very interested and warm reception to it."

Debra Burlingame, whose brother Charles Burlingame was the pilot aboard American Airlines Flight 77 that was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon, said the renaming of the tower is one more example that the nation is forgetting 9/11.

"If we can't say the word freedom out loud, God help us," she said.

"I understand the decision from a marketing point of view. But it saddens me that it's no longer economically viable to declare who we are."

I think we should now start calling it the Tyranny Tower.

Can't top that.

Freedom has no place in socialist America.

It would be fine to call the whole complex the WTC but the name “freedom tower” was only going to be given to one tower from the looks of things.

We’re just lucky they’re not renaming it “The One’s World Trade Center.”

I still think they should have taken Donald Trump up on his offer to rebuild the towers, bigger and taller than they had been. Now it's going to be like putting a parking lot over an old cemetery. The memories will be there, but it's hardly a memorial. As for Pennsylvania, personally, I think they should erect a single granite wall that simply states: Flight 93--Thank you     September 11, 2001 then lists the names of the passengers and crew under that.

I like it. “Screw you, towelheads, we rebuilt the WTC.”

Agreed. I, for one, still think that we should have rebuilt the towers with the original design. (Only taller!)

I’ve seen that Rockwell poster before. I’ve always interpreted it that the first two enable the second two. But that’s just me.

There are “World Trade Centers” everywhere — almost as common as “Main street.” I’ll go for it if we call it “ZERO World Trade Center” though.

“TERRORISM TOWER.”

That is SO 2008! Haven’t you heard it is “Man-Caused Diaster Tower” now.

Ah, yes. Capitalism at work. Sometimes Freepers are all for capitalism: sometimes we're not. Go figure.

Nah, I think that we are all trying to wrap our brain around what's happening and why. It's normal to knee-jerk not like the change, given that it's been such a symbol of 9/11. But the feelings will probably even out & we'll start using our heads.

What I find a little funny is the responses that say, "I'd make it taller or rebuild what was there before, or etc." and "I'd do this (or that)".

The developer is doing what he he has to do to rent the place. We forget that the place isn't "ours", it's his and it's a business. If it was our real estate, then we could do what we want -- but it's not.

Nothing stopping me from from
calling it “The Freedom Tower”.

If its a government project without the intent to make a profit that’s different.

exactly... and to me, the name--Freedom Tower--sounds like a government project or a ride at a patriotic-themed amusement park... it think it's an awful-sounding name...

I really liked that plan. It would have shown our enemy the futility of their efforts.

There really is no excuse for the Tower or Towers not being rebuilt by now.

Hey Fuddie! I get to be here today! We had a blizzard yesterday and it’s still snowing. The roads are frozen solid, and Schriever AFB, where I work, is closed. It’s about 10 miles east of town, out on the prairie.

So here I am, delighted to have a day off, listen to Rush, and be on the thread.

As for the tower, I still want the U.N. to be moved to its top 10 floors.

I’m sorry, but “Freedom Towers” ranks right up there with “Freedom Fries”. It was The World Trade Center before and it should be The World Trade Center again.
