Third-World Stove Soot Is Target in Climate Fight
NY Times ^ | April 16, 2009 | ELISABETH ROSENTHAL

KOHLUA, India — “It’s hard to believe that this is what’s melting the glaciers,” said Dr. Veerabhadran Ramanathan, one of the world’s leading climate scientists, as he weaved through a warren of mud brick huts, each containing a mud cookstove pouring soot into the atmosphere.

As women in ragged saris of a thousand hues bake bread and stew lentils in the early evening over fires fueled by twigs and dung, children cough from the dense smoke that fills their homes. Black grime coats the undersides of thatched roofs. At dawn, a brown cloud stretches over the landscape like a diaphanous dirty blanket.

In Kohlua, in central India, with no cars and little electricity, emissions of carbon dioxide, the main heat-trapping gas linked to global warming, are near zero. But soot — also known as black carbon — from tens of thousands of villages like this one in developing countries is emerging as a major and previously unappreciated source of global climate change.

While carbon dioxide may be the No. 1 contributor to rising global temperatures, scientists say, black carbon has emerged as an important No. 2, with recent studies estimating that it is responsible for 18 percent of...

--snip--

But the awareness of black carbon’s role in climate change has come so recently that it was not even mentioned as a warming agent in the 2007 summary report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that pronounced the evidence for global warming to be “unequivocal.” Mark Z. Jacobson, professor of environmental engineering at Stanford, said that the fact that black carbon was not included in international climate efforts was “bizarre,” but “partly reflects how new the idea is.” The United Nations is trying to figure out how to include black carbon in climate change programs, as is the federal government...

It's “bizarre,” because the IPCC'S 2007 summary report was never a serious scientific endeavor. It was just the politics of fear from those who want control.

A version of this article appeared in print on April 16, 2009, on page A1 of the New York edition. That's the frontpage.

Cooking with dung - if we don’t stop the leftists, that’s what we’ll be doing.

And what, exactly, are they going to replace it with? Or are they just going to let them starve?

I read recently that a third world country, I can’t remember which, suddenly forbade using peat for fires, which made it impossible for people to cook because that’s all they had.

Haven’t India and China been expecting big exemptions from the global “climate change” laws because they’re just “catching up” with the big polluter nations (aka “white male colonialists and imperialists”) and, gee gosh, isn’t the 21st Century *their* time to pollute the atmosphere and to take full economic advantage of the newly self-hamstrung Western idiot nations?

Which Q.E.D. clearly demonstrates that “climate change” has everything to do with political science and very little to do with actual science.

For them, the next fuel up the economic ladder is kerosene..which still burns with a soot.
It will be another 50 years before they all have lpg or gas stoves.

This is a perfect example of liberalism run amuck. Thousands of african die every year from lung disease, because they cook on indoor fires. Obviously, cooking on indoor fires creates alot of air pollution.

Why don’t we use cooking fires in this country? Oh yeah, we are evil and use electric ranges, fed by evil coal burning power plants.

Can Africa have power plants? Hell no - solar for them.

Can Africa damn rivers? Hell no - hurts the environment.

Can africa use DDT and other chemicals? Nope, environment again.

One of the biggest crimes of the last 50 years has been the western world’s refusal to allow Africa to develop itself, using environmentalism as an excuse. Its racist and deadly...

And now, all of the sudden, these idiots figure out that burning dung causes pollution? Whatever.

Yes, soon enough they’ll be going after the Nepali Sherpas who burn tons of yak dung for heat.

Because as we all know the smoke from burning yak dung is not “natural”.

!?!?!?!?!

It’s not so improbable. In San Francisco they have all but banned woodstoves (as discussed here on FR a few months ago) and indeed SFO has an enforcement body which pounds the pavement looking for telltale wisps of woodsmoke emanating from residential chimneys!

(by the way it takes weeks for the yak dung odor to leave your sensory system)

My point was that we will be priced out of the same if Obama has his way. I really do believe between the health “care” plan which will kill the old and babies along with alternative fuel and green cars which will be too expensive this is the type of thing they are using to thin the sheep. Less population and a population that is considered healthy will make paying for their socialism plans much easier. It doesn’t matter a whit what these people have to cook with—they simply don’t give a damn.

a rough guess on my part is there around 1billion westerners vs the rest of the 6,790,062,216 world population(CIA Factbook estimation for july 2009)... now tell me who makes more pollution.

but it's destroy the west with their AGW scam at all costs.

Can you imagine some prissy libtard running around these villages, with people just surviving, and going off on them with the whole global warming shtick.

Why, yes I can imagine that; it's JUST what your stock-in-trade lib would do.

I can also imagine 15 minutes down the timeline as a band of sweating, upset villagers with sticks stand over a bloody mass of quivering protoplasm catching their breath following a bit of exertion.

Hmmmm. I wonder how well quivering protoplasm burns??

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..............

Lentils simmered over animal dung....I suppose sheep dung makes lentils taste differently than those cooked over goat, or cow dung..?? Imagine the aroma...

Of course if you choose the right cow, you’re potentially cooking with your grandma’s crap, and I suppose these heathens find some nutritional (or cultural) value in that as well...

One can only imagine what other unsavory habits these people indulge in, but we expect them to grasp the fundamentals of Global Warming/Climate Change??
