GOP Chairman Steele Calls on Obama to Withdraw Sebelius Nomination, after GOP Senators Block Vote

Remarks come on same day Sebelius vetoed another late-term abortion bill

By Kathleen Gilbert

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele today challenged President Obama to withdraw his nomination of Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as Secretary of Health and Human Services, until straightforward answers be given regarding her ties to the abortion industry.  Steele's statement came the same day Republican senators blocked Sebelius' confirmation vote, and the same day the Kansas governor vetoed yet another state law that would have restricted late-term abortions.

"Significant questions remain about Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' evolving relationship with a late-term abortion doctor as well as about her position on the practice of late-term abortions," said Steele in a press release today.  "The Senate should not vote, nor should Gov. Sebelius be confirmed, until these questions are answered fully and completely."

Steele pointed out that Gov. Sebelius "has not been forthcoming" about her financial relationship with Kansas late-term abortionist George Tiller.

"She [Sebelius] admitted the full extent of the political contributions she received from Dr. Tiller only after press reports contradicted her previous financial statements," Steele pointed out.

The GOP Chairman also challenged Sebelius to publicly reveal her position on "the extremist and heinous practice of late-term abortions."

"The vast majority of Americans do not support the concept of late-term abortions," said Steele.  "They deserve to know whether President Obama's choice to be the nation's top health official supports these indefensible procedures."

Steele said that until Gov. Sebelius provides "clear and complete answers to these questions," the Senate should not vote on her confirmation.

If Sebelius and the Obama administration refuse to give answers, he concluded, "President Obama should withdraw her nomination."

Steele's remarks put further strain on a nomination already troubled by questions lately raised concerning Sebelius' true relationship with George Tiller.  Tiller, currently under investigation for performing illegal abortions, conducts one of the busiest late-term abortion businesses in the country.  Pro-life advocates point out that his success is largely indebted to Sebelius' consistent vetoing of laws that would have restricted or enforced restrictions on late-term abortions in the state.

When asked about her connection to the Kansas abortionist by one Republican senator last week, Sebelius reported only a fraction of the actual donations she received from Tiller and his political action committee, as later revealed in state records and a letter from Tiller. (http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2009/apr/09041611.html

Despite these concerns, the GOP appeared to have raised little opposition to the confirmation before GOP Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked the confirmation vote today after a lengthy debate.  Two of the ten Finance Committee Republicans, Sens. Pat Roberts of Kansas and Olympia Snowe of Maine, had voted to bring Sebelius' nomination to the Senate floor.

In an additional complication, more confirmation of Sebelius' extreme abortion support came today as the Kansas governor vetoed yet another law that would have restricted late-term abortions in the state, reports the Associated Press.

The law aimed to give women and girls, as well as their husbands or parents, power to sue abortionists if they perform the procedure illegally.  The legislation also would have required late-term abortionists to provide a fuller account of each procedure to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Sebelius' abortion connection is not the only concern that has been raised about the HHS nominee.

Sen. John Kyl (R-Ariz.), the same senator who questioned Sebelius on her abortion ties, issued a press release Monday saying that he would not support Sebelius' nomination because she supports initiatives that could lead to a rationing of healthcare, to the disadvantage of the elderly and disabled.

"She [Sebelius] left me with no assurance that HHS, federal health care programs, or any new entity - such as the Federal Coordinating Council - will not use comparative effectiveness research as a tool to deny care," said Kyl.  "And this should be a matter of concern to all of us."

Kyl highlighted one particular project that Sebelius supports, which promotes cost effectiveness research as providing "accurate and objective information to guide future policies that support the allocation of health resources for the treatment of acute and chronic conditions."

"'Allocation of health resources' is a euphemism for denying care based on cost," said Kyl.  "Yet, Governor Sebelius did not agree to pull this project."

Democrats say they have enough support to prevent a filibuster on the vote, which will likely happen next week.

Need to jump all over Senator Pat Roberts [Republican] of Kansas

We all know the other Republican [Olympia Snowe of Maine] is a RINO.

But there are some conservative state Senators might be urged to join a filibuster on this nominee...

If nothing else, allow her to get in, and then start the IMPEACHMENT proceedings against her.

She has lied to Congress, which would be one grounds for impeachment...

Well, I’ll say one thing. I think Steele weighed in at exactly the right time. For once the Republicans seem to be doing something right—and politically smart.

But there are some conservative state Senators might be urged to join a filibuster on this nominee...

Senator Ben Nelson-D of Nebraska has helped the Republicans with filibusters and votes... He voted with the Republicans to prevent the Mexico City policy on abortion from being overturned...

There are Senators from conservative Western states that are Democrat and, in my opinion vulnerable. These would be North Dakota (Conrad and Dorgan), South Dakota, Montana (Baucus and possibly Tester)...

Nothing ventured, nothing gained...

The Tea Parties have fired up a number of Americans. Maybe that energy can be used to thwart Sebelius becoming HHS Secretary...

Yep, Steele has turned the corner. He’s got a long way to go though but I think he got his sea legs now.

I agree. He seems to be getting his bearings a bit better now.

Straightforward answers *have* been given, just not by her, or her abortionist supporter, or by the Obama administration. A quick search for Sibellius site:freerepublic.com makes for interesting reading.

I can understand Roberts introducing her to the senate as a fellow Kansas, that's a common courtesy. Even the idiot widow Carhnahan did it for John Ashcroft eight years ago (after he graciously yielded the senate seat to her in a highly questionable election), but in the end she voted against confirmation. Roberts needs to make it clear that he will do the same.

Yes, it will probably only be a symbolic gesture. Sebelius has the votes to get in anyway.

She should get confirmed and Kansas should be rid of her. She will be another one Oba Mao can throw under the bus when he needs a boost in his ratings.

No, MT and ND especially are socialist in Senate elections and have been for many years, crusty ol’ Conrad Burns being an 18-year exception. We can’t depend on MT or ND any more than we can NC ot VA any more.

This is fire for the Notre Dame Scandal. Today Sebelius thumbed her nose at the Pro Life movement with another veto...

This time to protect abortionists from lawsuits...

Another Obama pro-abort ally to move to Washington, DC.

Maybe the Notre Dame Scandal folks should vent hostility towards Sebelius/Obama by fighting this nomination...

Just a thought!

Dittos. Bravo to Chairman Steele. People called him names whenhe had his rocky start as GOP chair - I am going to call him a "Man of Steele" if he keeps up hammering away like this.

This is why Republicans are such losers.
They give tax evaders, lobbyists, and Wall Street criminals a pass when 0bama nominates them, but then raise a fuss over abortion.

It’s like the GOP is trying to to make itself irrelevant.
Honestly, if Democrats were devising a way to destroy the Republican party from the inside, could they do any better than this current crop of Republicans are doing?

Think about it.

Well, I don’t think legalizing murder is a lesser issue than theft.

Which is not to say that they shouldn’t go after tax evaders (in fact a couple didn’t make it) or criminals as well.

It’s not a good idea to write off any of the three main branches of the conservative coalition. If anything, the social/religious conservatives probably have the largest number of votes in that coalition. And late term abortions are not politically popular among the voters.

Well, they already wrote off economic conservatives long ago, and I haven't heard Michael Steele speaking up for national defence conservatives much on 0bama's "torture" memo show trial.
If anything, the social/religious conservatives probably have the largest number of votes in that coalition.
Probably true, since they are so good at driving everyone else from the Republican party.
And late term abortions are not politically popular among the voters.
I really don't think that is what is at the forefront of everyone's mind right now. The issue I take with it is not the position, but how it contributes to the continued appearance that this is all the GOP really stands for. It's a matter of the appearance it gives of Republican priorities.

With all that is going on, why is this the issue Michael Steele chooses to speak up on? The taxpayers and investors, and everyone with a bank account are being looted by the government and the Federal Reserve, and a nominee's political position on abortion is where Steele makes his stand?
Seriously?

I disagree.

The pro-lifers that are part of the conservative movement are a very committed bunch...

We now have tens of thousands of people who got involved in the Tea Parties. We now have to cultivate that energy into a new crop of people like the folks on FreeRepublic.com

Adversity is often an oppourtunity... Even if you fail once, you get back on your two feet, and try again... And try again...

Watch the movie Rocky, and then ask how it might apply to changing America. Then watch Rocky II...

You may not need to do that -- but you must have some sort of spiritual nourishment...
