You're absolutely right, but unfortunately that seems to be what works in today's America.
If Bush did nothing else, he proved the idiom that nice guys finish last. Bush, probably because of his upbringing, refused to criticize the Clinton administration or any of it's advisers. Obama and Axelrod clearly have made a completely different tactical decision. From what I can tell, so far it's working beautifully.

Brings up a story from my high school years.
My friend had gotten in trouble and we were being lectured by his dad in his living room. His dad was pacing back and forth, then finally exclaimed, “S.O.B.!”, to which my friend off his tongue replied, “Well you married her!”
Somewhere between realizing what he had said and his dad turning beet red with anger, we mad a mad dash for the door!
