U.S. to Offer New Mileage and Emission Standards
New York Times ^ | May 18, 2009 | John M. Broder

Posted on 05/18/2009 11:00:10 AM PDT by reaganaut1

The Obama administration will issue new national requirements for the emissions and mileage of cars and light trucks in an effort to end a long-running conflict among the states, the federal government and auto manufacturers, industry officials said Monday.

President Obama will announce as early as Tuesday that he will combine California’s tough new auto-emissions rules with the existing corporate average fuel economy standard to create a single new national standard, the officials said. As a result, cars and light trucks sold in the United States will be roughly 30 percent cleaner and more fuel-efficient by 2016.

The White House would not divulge details, but environmental advocates and industry officials briefed on the program said that the president would grant California’s longstanding request that its own tailpipe emissions standards be imposed nationally. That request was denied by the Bush administration but has been under review by top Obama administration officials since January.

But Mr. Obama is planning to go further, putting in place new mileage requirements to be administered by the Department of Transportation that would match the stringency of the California program.

Under the new standard, the national fleet mileage rule for cars would be roughly 42 miles a gallon in 2016. Light trucks would have to meet a fleet average of slightly more than 26.2 miles a gallon by 2016.

“This is a very big deal,” said Daniel Becker of the Safe Climate Campaign, a group that has pushed for tougher mileage and emissions standards with the goal of curbing the heat-trapping gases that have been linked to global warming. “This is the single biggest step the American government has ever taken to cut greenhouse-gas emissions.”

This will be popular until American are forced to realize that they will be pushed into small cars and that small cars get poor marks in collision tests . Why Americans seem to think automakers can just magically increase mileage without reducing quality in other ways or increasing price, I don't know.

What auto makers are going to be left by then?

It seems, when I talk to people who believe this is all good, they honestly think that the big bad corporations (car manufacturers, oil companies, etc) are all evil and want us to all die. They simply are so brainwashed, it’s amazing they can function in the real world.

Uh... back to the headline...

Is Obama “offering” this or “mandating” it?

Wasn’t this one of Jimmy Carter’s brilliant moves that failed miserably?

The real world isn’t real anymore, but anything the mainstream media says is real.

Ths usual government logic; “We’ll say it will be done and it will be done because we say it will be done.”

Honestly, this is what sucks about being a rational person; you have to watch on as other people, often in positions of authority, make more and more illogical decisions.

hologams!

The way I put away roast beef as a kid, my dad said I had to have a hollow leg. Is a hologam the same thing?

You know, I’d have to ask someone with more physics than me, but I say, why not?

Ah, 0bama. It's like Jimmy Carter all over again.

Let's just hope the country will bounce back when the Pubbies retake control of the House in 2010.

Yeah, but at least we'll all be equally subject to injury and death by driving small cars.

I’d prefer dealerships to offer the new “clean diesel” retro-fits for existing cars/SUVs.

No, we won’t all be equally subject. Not as long, for example, as my fourteen-year-old Dodge Ram still runs. There’s a word for Smart Cars and their ilk when my truck is near them. That word is “speedbump.”

Which means, the next logical step is for The One and his flying monkeys to start working on forcing older “non-green” vehicles like my truck off the road by tightening emissions rules on *existing* vehicles and forcing them to meet unreasonable standards. Watch for it in the next couple of years. The mechanism already exists to do it in many states. Here in North Carolina, for example, in addition to a yearly mandatory safety inspection, I have to have an emissions inspection on my truck as well. If they tighten the emissions rules to the point where that old 318 V8 can’t meet them, I can’t renew my registration, and the truck’s days on the road are over.

Well it certainly has done wonders for the Central Valley of California. All the pollution moves East from the Greater San Francisco area into the central valley during the summer. For a long time we had stricter requirements, because our air was more polluted, even though the pollution came from the great environmentalists in SF. It is always do as I say not as I do. Think about Air Force One over NYC for a photo op. Did the mystery person who asked for the flight (not the approver) give any thought to the pollution caused by it? I think not.

Besides if you are rich, you can just by Carbon Credits from Al Gore and you are in compliance.
