THE Obama Administration has launched what is said to be the strongest attack yet by the US on Japanese lethal "scientific" whaling.
In a long-awaited detailed statement released last night, the Administration criticised the misuse of International Whaling Commission rules, and said scientific whaling undermined the global moratorium on commercial whaling.
The statement to a Congressional committee by the White House and National Oceans and Atmospheric Administration strongly defended the 23-year-old moratorium and urged disputing IWC nations to resolve their differences now.
Refraining from criticism of Japan under the Bush administration, the US has placed itself squarely in the anti-whaling camp alongside countries such as Australia, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
"It's the clearest condemnation by the United States of scientific whaling as practised by Japan since they began edging around the moratorium," said IFAW's global whales campaigner, Patrick Ramage.
The White House Environmental Quality committee chairwoman, Nancy Sutley, joined the new NOAA head, Jane Lubchenco, in telling the House of Representatives committee hearing that "the conservation of whales is of the utmost priority to the Obama Administration".

Apparently the Japanese didn’t watch Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home
Is there any ally left that Obama hasn’t given the finger too?
I heard whales are tasty.
tastes like chicken
Well I’m glad the Obama (ptui!) Administration is tacking the really really serious world problems head on and not wasting time with Iran or Islamic terrorism.........../s
Killing babies for science is okay, but leave the whales alone.
Can’t wait to see how the whales help us with a resurgent and increasingly militarized China.
Well, of course. Whales are people but babies aren’t, don’t you know?
The treaty is writen in black and white. I bet the Japanese are 100% within it. Thats why we see language saying “edging around it”, “misusing the rules” etc,,.
If it was a clear violation, they would say so. If you really mean no whale killing at all, then next time write the treaty to say exactly what you want. And as long as they are harvesting in a responsible way, and arent wiping out a population, who cares?
Kinda funny too, they dont mind if an eskimo kills a whale. Its just as traditional for the Japanese.
Great! We’re all saved! He finally got his priorities straight!! Then again, a strongly worded letter can only go so far. Mr. Obambi will not go further than that, he would rather talk it over.
“Mr. Obambi will not go further than that, he would rather talk it over.”
Thank God. I do not think we could handle it if the Japanese started getting hostile to interference in their personal affairs and got militaristic.
I know for a fact that at some point there’s going to be a declaration of war against us. It’s only a matter of time.
Sticks and stones people, it’s just words, that is all liberals are good for.
Does obama adher to the statement “harpoon a fat chick and save a whale”?
Why don’t we invite the Japanese over to harpoon some of the fatties? I distinctly remember a slogan “save the whales, harpoon a fat chick.”
What do you think?
I second that opinion...
Otherwise, they develop diabetes, pernicious anemia, and several other diseases and die in horrible wasted conditions many years before their time.
In short, both these old gals are asking Congress to engage in genocide.
