Iran authorities acknowledge voting irregularities: Special courts set up to try protesters

Government authorities stepped up their crackdown on protesters Monday, as officials for the first time acknowledged evidence of voting irregularities in this month's presidential election, the issue that has sparked the largest street demonstrations since the Islamic Republic was established three decades ago.

An initial probe into the June 12 presidential election has shown that the number of ballots cast exceeded the number of registered voters in 50 locales, a discrepancy affecting 3 million votes or more, according to the spokesman for the Guardian Council, a body of jurists and clerics in charge of safeguarding the country's constitution

The council will deliver its final verdict on the disputed election by Wednesday, according to a report by the official Islamic Republic News Agency.

Meanwhile, officials announced plans to set up a special court and warned that anyone who encouraged more demonstrations, including reformist challenger Mir-Hossein Mousavi, is subject to arrest.

In some of its sternest remarks yet, the Revolutionary Guard announced that anyone who continued to confront the security forces "will be considered a threat" to the system, the news agency reported.

"The guardians of the Islamic Revolution and the courageous Basiji," a pro-government militia, "are determined to act strongly to return peace and tranquillity to society . . . and to clean the country of these plotters and hooligans," said the statement, according to the agency.

They still do not have their "story" worked out. Not that it will matter.

If another Nationalist Military Officer jumps and the battle will be on. All they need are the weapons.

“clean the country of these plotters and hooligans”

Yeah, like Neda, with her youth and all, and that Anne Frank with that plotting diary.

The fight for liberty in Iran is far from over, and is getting brutal.

They’re setting up courts to try people who objected to an election they say was fraudulent? Maybe they should apologize to the people who were arrested.

Y’all come to our Fourth of July barbecue, now.

I believe the same thing would happen here if the people took to the streets demanding "The Birth Certicate" or protesting Frankentheft,

they would just declare it an illegal assembly and start making arrests

You need to go out and protest something to reassure yourself of the freedom you say is in doubt, then take a moment to kiss the ground in thankfulness.

and the courageous Basiji," a pro-government militia,

The Basiji should more accurately be referred to as a civilian national security force

I am not talking about standing on the corner with a sign, I did that at a counter protest in the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan, the cops stood right there a few feet away staring at us.

A real massive protest large enough to get some attention and force change would end up the same as the Iran protests.

I remember Kent State, and I remember how the politicians were deliberately losing the war and wasting draftees for no reason
