Southern writer Walker Percy liked to poke fun at Ohioans in his novels, just to even things out a bit.
"Usually Mississippians and Georgians are getting it from everybody, and Alabamians," he once explained to an interviewer. "So what's wrong with making smart-aleck remarks about Ohio? Nobody puts Ohio down. Why shouldn't I put Ohio down?"
Percy, the genial genius, laughed at his own remark.
Now, apparently, it's the Buckeye State's turn to poke back. In a fusillade of pique, Ohio Sen. George Voinovich charged that Southerners are what's wrong with the Republican Party.
"We got too many Jim DeMints (South Carolina) and Tom Coburns (Oklahoma)," he told an interviewer with the Columbus Dispatch. "It's the Southerners. They get on TV and go 'errrr, errrrr.' People hear them and say, 'These people, they're Southerners. The party's being taken over by Southerners. What the hell they got to do with Ohio?"
Down South, people are trying to figure out what "errrr, errrrr" means.
Jack Bass, author of eight books about social and political change in the South, speculated in an e-mail that Voinovich really meant grrrr, grrrrr, as in "growling canines whose bark scares more than do Obama's purrs, especially with the Dow at a nine-month high."

Indeed it is
Yes we did and we look forward to their arrival. No more obnoxious yankees to work around, no more heavy snow in the winter, no more union mandates, lower taxes, Georgia is about business and NCR is a welcomed addition.
Noonan admitted in her previous column that she is a Prius-driving vegetarian ecologist who wants to save the baby seals. And she thinks the Waxman-Markley cap-and-trade bill has a lot of merits. She reeketh of elitist liberal RINO to me just with those positions.
One thing is for certain: both groups will not co-exist peaceably in a single political party; not for much longer.
The middle class is still a majority. The Tea Party movement needs to morph into a middle-class movement that boots the east coast elitists out of the GOP and draws in working-class Dems to replace them. In other words, it re-builds much of the Reagan coalition, but brings in more middle-class folks and tells the RINOs to go to their natural home - the Dem party.
All is not pure and sweet here in the South, we do have our neighbor, Sen Lindsey Graham in South Carolina who likely qualifies as a “good” Southerner to Voinovich. He will tap dance for pieces of silver, say “yas suh,” hold his hat in his hand, whatever it takes to please his RINO and Democrat masters. It keeps him working in the “big house” and out of the fields with the rest of us Southerners.
Parker’s problem lies north of her neck.
Considering how much of a basket case Ohio is, why would any party want to emulate what happens there? And last I saw, the Ohio GOP was completely discredited due to rampant corruption.
Meanwhile, Tom Coburn, that dreadful Oklahoman, is one of the few truly ethical members of either house of Congress. Yet he's the problem with the party?
Where exactly did I say they needed to ask my permission?
I simply said I’m disgusted they print her crap.
Get it?
Well actually she just hates conservatives.
She’s spews total bile when it comes to Palin.
‘nuf said.
Don’t tell them that. I want Yankees to stay up north...
She's been fully assimilated into the Beltway Borg. A land where money grows on trees (or, at least is created by the Fed) and concepts such as a budget and equal treatment under the law are hunted down and killed.
Yankee women are jealous and Yankee men are envious...
Well then don’t read it. Get it.
The truth is this country made a huge mistake in electing Obama. Most of the country is conservative, but with the help of the big government GOP, we put a socialist in power. Now, people are starting to comprehend the magnitude of the error and will be looking elsewhere for change. It will not be looking to the McCain, Rockefeller wing of the GOP of the party for this change; it will be looking for a conservative.
I sense that Parker and many other big government Republicans sense this growing conservative upsurge and will do almost anything to diminish it.
Well what do you expect from someone whose last name rhymes with bi_ch?
This article is a crock of Obama! A disgrace for IBD!
The roots of modern-day racism are in soil north of the Mason-Dixon line.
That's what all scared Yankees say, "stay with us don't go, please Mr. South".. blah blah blah.. I'm tired of this crap.
Funny, you don't here that "Union at all cost" crap from most Southerners, at least the ones that call themselves Conservative.
