Businessman Randy Altschuler is mounting a challenge to New York Rep. Timothy H. Bishop, heightening the possibility the four-term congressman will face his first tough re-election battle.
Altschuler, a successful entrepreneur and prolific Republican donor, launched his campaign Tuesday, declaring that he is "committed to bringing my business experience - combined with a realistic, common-sense approach to problem solving - to help lower taxes, reform government and create jobs."

This badly titled article announces that Republicans have scored another recruiting success.
Nonsense.
If it is true that the GOP has no chance to win any of the 40 to 80 competitive seats currently held by DEMS, then the DEMS have a permanent majority. That is nonsense.
This seat went Obama 52% McCain 48%. Bishop should be shaking in his liberal boots.

thanks, bfl
I’ve got to actually see it happen to believe it. The northeastern states are very blue states with many voters who will always refuse to vote for the GOP, no matter what the circumstances really are! And of what remaining GOP office holders there are in the northeastern states, almost all of them are RINOs instead of conservatives, which is often just as bad as electing Democrats.
Not this time; I think something has changed.
What do we know about Altschuker?
The NY-01 was drawn as a Republican district, and the GOP was upset with the 2001 redistricting in Long Island only because the two Dem-held districts (NY-02 and NY-04) weren’t made more competitive for the GOP—everyone thought that the NY-01 and NY-03 would be fairly comfortably Republican. But then Felix Grucci, who won the NY-01 in 2000 when incumbent Republican-turned-Democrat Michael Forbes lost the Democrat primary to a retired schoolteacher (thanks in great part to brilliant advertising from the GOP thanking Forbes for voting for the Contract with America), made some stupid accusations against Bishop in the 2002 race and proved to be a terrible campaigner, and we haven’t gotten a first-tier opponent for Bishop since. I hope that Altschuker is the one.
President Bush carried the NY-01 in 2004; we can send Bishop packing. Lazio as our gubernatorial nominee may also help Republicans throughout Long Island.
As Pete mentioned this particular seat is not very “blue” (or should I say commie RED). It barley went for Obama and went for Bush in 2004. I believe most of the local officials are Republican. If McCain and Bush had campaigned in NY they would have easily taken the district.
It should be in Republican hands. The next time Republicans win a majority in the house this district is likely to be amongst the 218+.
If the democrats have full control of NY redistricting in 2012 they could make it less friendly though.
......
The title of the article is amusing.
