City Government Closed For Business On Monday

The City of Chicago will basically be closed for business on Aug. 17, a reduced-service day in which most city employees are off without pay, according to a release from the Office of Budget and Management. City Hall, public libraries, health clinics and most city offices will be closed.

Emergency service providers including police, firefighters and paramedics will be working at full strength, but most services not directly related to public safety, including street sweeping, will not be provided, the release said.

That also includes garbage pickup. Residents who receive regular collection on Mondays should expect trash to be picked up the following day, the release said. Some other customers may experience a one-day delay as collectors catch up.

But..but...but the president said that we have “stepped back from the brink” and that the economy is on a roll again thanks to “Cash for Clunkers.” Somebody is lying.

Insolvency of a major US city?

Look for the markets to RALL—EEEE ON MONDAY.

And look for MarketWatch to spin this as a sign of economic recovery.

How much overtime pay will the trash collectors get because they have to “catch up”???? My hunch - more than they saved by giving them the day off. Stupid stupid stupid.

Black victims of white perps welcome.

Black victims of black perps, come back later.

Sorry. My cynicism is getting the best of me lately.

I really need to go renew my press credentials and go to a press conference in Sacramento, and when one of those idiots stands up at the podium and talks about how they’re trying to cut costs, I’ll ask them: How much has your salary risen in the last four years? How much more are we paying for your staff, for their benefits, and have you and your staff taken the same or greater cuts that you seek from others?

The three seconds they pause before they direct someone else to give them an easy question will be priceless.

Same thing is happening in Alabama with ‘the State’. State institutions (colleges, etc) are closed on a Friday for the ‘foreseeable’.

They need to talk to Daly and find out where the money is hidden. Or maybe Bill Ayers?

Sounds like a little community organizing should fix Chicago's problems right up. (/sarcasm)

Folks remember one thing....

Cook county has the highest sales tax in the nation at 10.25% and this is still happening.

The excuse of course will be that people just aren’t taxed enough.

Since this is a Chicago thread, I’ll ask it here. What is it about putting on a Bears helmet that makes quarterbacks throw to the other team?

The City Council recently approved moving the reduced-service day planned for New Year's Eve to Monday.

In addition to reduced service days, all non-union employees were asked to take a series of furlough days and unpaid holidays, and most non-sworn union employees agreed to similar unpaid time off.
