Invocations at City Council Meetings (vanity)

Local city council invocations ...

TOPICS: Culture/Society; Politics/Elections; Your Opinion/Questions
KEYWORDS: citycouncil; invocation; prayers
My local City Council has been threatened with a lawsuit if they do not discontinue invocations. I am sending them a Rutherford Institute memo but I'm trying to compose a cover letter in support of invocations. Can anyone provide a source for some type of template?

Just write from the heart. Your own words mean more to the average member than something from a template that they’ve probably already seen.

Our Council dealt with the same issue and created a ‘moment of reflection’ at which any local religious leader can speak. To keep the lefties happy, the leaders are admonished not to use the word “Jesus” in their comments. For some strange reason, most of them forget the admonition. When we get a threat letter, the city usually contacts the speaker who says “oops”. That sentiment is duly conveyed to the letter writer.

I believe invocations would be better if JESUS was left out of it. That’s when people get a bit testy.

Of course you'll have to concede that Jesus, being God, is difficult to omit from religious invocations. Other than that, I guess you have a point?

No, Jesus is not the God of all people. Why can’t you just refer to God?

It's against my religion.

Is that supposed to be funny? I don’t get it.

No it isn't. I take my religion very seriously, but Christians don't get all bent out of shape when somebody mentions Muhammed or Buddha or whatever it is Hindus worship. In fact, I haven't noticed anybody having a problem with invocations containing the name of anyone other than Jesus. But He told us it would be like this.
