Those New Jersey school children singing songs of praise to Obama might remind us of this poem from Animal Farm by George Orwell:

Comrade Napoleon

Friend of fatherless!

Fountain of happiness!

Lord of the swill-bucket!

Oh, how my soul is on

Fire when I gaze at thy

Calm and commanding eye,

Like the sun in the sky,

Comrade Napoleon!

Thou art the giver of

All that thy creatures love,

Full belly twice a day, clean straw to roll upon;

Fortunately, they still read Animal Farm in many public schools. (But I wonder for how long?)

Orwell’s satire hews fairly close to the actual 1930s socialist realism genre in the Soviet Union.

“Ode to Stalin” was the title of more than one famous poem of the era.

Everything old is new again. Remember, it’s not your father’s communism - it’s new and improved!
