(Houston Chronicle endorsement) We recommend Bill White in the Democratic primary for governor
Houston Chronicle ^ | Feb. 13, 2010, 8:21PM | no byline (unsigned editors)

Fresh from completing three successful terms as Houston's mayor, Bill White is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor. The Chronicle believes this accomplished attorney, businessman and public administrator is far and away the most qualified candidate to represent the party in seeking to crack the Republican lock on statewide offices.

In his six years running City Hall, White presided over a financial reorganization that reduced unfunded employee pension liabilities, aggressively promoted toxic air pollution enforcement, crafted innovative public safety programs, and ably directed the city's response to an influx of Hurricane Katrina refugees from New Orleans and the subsequent threats of Hurricanes Rita and Ike. In doing so he proved his executive mettle and worthiness to lead state government...

He noted the ominous fact that a smaller percentage of Texans between the ages of 25 and 35 have two- and four-year college degrees than in the past.

“Education, public and higher, is the principal business of state government,” he said. White pledged as governor to work to lower dropout rates and increase the productivity and affordability of Lone Star education...

He criticizes the decision by Gov. Rick Perry not to seek available federal grant funds for local school districts. White disputes the governor's rationale that the money came with restrictive federal standards...

As mayor, White worked well with both liberal and conservative City Council members to enact policies and programs that improved the city. We are confident he can do the same in Austin for all Texans.

Yea, because being an Epic Fail mayor of Houston is qualification to run our great State into the ground.

Well that’s no surprise. (sigh)

The KBH ads are unreal. “If you want a proven conservative . . .” Gag me, we’ve already seen you, KBH, we sure as heck don’t want you back!

Bill White, the run away spender, left the city of Houston with a 70 million dollars deficit when he left office, he would feel right at home in the senate. Is this the kind of senator that the Houston Chronicle wants?. You bet he is.

Good point! Bill White would also most likely vote for Amnesty for illegal aliens, this alone makes him the WRONG choice for Texans.

I will be voting for Governor Good Hair. KBH never offered a reason to vote FOR her...just reasons to vote against Perry. I don’t see a better state out there than Texas so why should I mess with success?

This is for governor. After this election (certainly if he loses) he’ll continue the race for US Senate that he began after he became a lame duck mayor.

The Comical endorsed Lee P. Brown in 3 consercutive elections as Houston Mayor.

And if you know anything about Lee (period) Pee (period)'s tenure in City Hall you'll understand they've shafted Bill White with an endorsement.

The Carbuncle is worthless. I had the misfortune to read one at the doctor's office - 98% progressive propaganda, 2% news.

I wouldn't take a subscription for free.

I voted today. I wanted to play the odds, so I voted in the Republican primary. My observation is that most Republican politicians are liars and crooks, so you play the odds. ALL Democratic politicians are liars and crooks, so voting Dem is a sure thing.

I'm contemplating voting in the DNC primary. Voting against Ronnie Earle, Bill White, Kinky Friedman, and incumbent Democrats....

I voted today too. The lady asked me if I wanted her to stamp my card “Republican” or not. I figured she was a Dem so I said, “You betcha.”

Fixed.

White is a nut, btw. He should run for Gov. of California where his moronic statist claptrap would be welcomed by a fresh group of illiterate alien invaders.
